    I euthanized my hen yesterday

Yesterday I euthanized one of my white leghorns with a hatchet. It was difficult to do as I had never done anything like that before. She had been suffering from a sour crop. A couple of days ago she appeared to be recovering, but took a turn for the worse yesterday. After letting her out to...

    Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and...

My hen just passed away suddenly

Yesterday I celebrated the 2nd birthday of my ten leghorns. They have been such a joy to me. This afternoon I looked out and one the hens was laying on the ground. I crawled on my hands and knees through the run and found she had just died, probably not a half hour earlier. They all seemed...

My 10 Leghorns are 2 years old today

My 10 Leghorns are 2 years old today The day I picked up the day old chicks and brought them home, I fell in love with them. To anyone who is thinking of getting some chickens but are unsure of it, all I can say is do it. You won't regret it. They will make you smile and laugh everyday. 8-)

    Sardines and other fish

On occasion I give my 10 leghorns a treat of sardines. They go absolutely bonkers when I serve them the fish. Sardines are loaded with omega oils and the mushy bones are a source of calcium. Another treat they enjoy is canned salmon. Sorry, I tend to endulge my girls.

    Permanent Chicken Goggles???

Hi folks, Early this year I had to give my ten pullets each goggles (I can't remember the proper name for them) to stop them from attacking each other. I hated to do it but nothing else was working. They nearly killed one of the flock. It was successful and they immediately became less...

    My hen swallowed a screw

My hen swallowed a 3/4" screw today after I dropped it on the ground while putting a hatch on the run. I looked and it was gone. I guess she thought it was a bug or worm. Can a chicken pass a screw through their digestive tract? My worst worry is that it will lodge itself and cause blood...

    Chickens and Groundhogs

I have my 9 month old pullets living in a reconditioned old shed. The 3 previous years there has a been a groundhog living underneath it. The chicken run is built over one of the old exit holes of the groundhog. Last summer I caved it in and covered it over. I noticed today that the groundhog...

    Diatomaceous Earth and Piperazine

Hi, I have 10 hens that are 34 weeks old. They are doing exceedingly well and are producing terrific eggs. I am looking for information on the use of Diatomaceous Earth to dust them and Piperazine for worming them. I've never used these products and I'm a relative newcomer at raising...

    Bleeding Comb

One of my girls has been the target of pecking from the other 9 ever since they started laying eggs on Christmas Eve. There were no problems with any of them until the first eggs started arriving. This morning I went out to the chicken shed and one of them was bleeding from the back of the...

Hens attacking other hens while they are laying

Hi, Yesterday (Christmas Eve) my hens laid their first two eggs. Today they laid two more. I have ten chickens. When I went out today I noticed a bit of blood on the combs of two of the hens. As one was in the corner trying to lay her egg, others were coming over and attacking her violently...

Infrared heat lamps and egg laying

Hi folks, I'm new at raising chickens. My girls are around 18 weeks old and are probably nearing their egg laying stage. The temps here last night in Nova Scotia were around -14 celcius or 10 fahrenheit. I have a 250 watt infrared overhead lamp in the hen house. This morning it was a few...
