12 week old, hasn't started crowing yet. Very friendly. Sold as a Prairie Bluebell Egger. Since that breed has so many varieties of colors and patterns, not sure if that is the correct breed.
We bought 6 chicks from the feed store at the end of March to add to our coop. They are approx 10 weeks old now. I've been watching their feathers, and up until a few days ago, I was thinking they were all girls. But, I think we now have 1 boy. No crowing...yet... Tail feather has a slight...
I'm hoping this is just an infection that we can clear up, but thought I'd see what others thought.
Our 19 week old silver wyandotte suddenly has a swollen eye. No other changes in the coop, flock, food, etc. She is getting around fine, no coughing, rattling, wheezing, etc. I don't see any...
These "chicks" are now 17 1/2 weeks old. They were hatched from brown eggs and were fluffy yellow chicks. I believe we have 3 cockerels and one pullet. The boys just started crowing this past weekend, and waking up at 5am is getting old. No information on the breed as they were hatched in my...
These are chicks from my son's classroom. We plan on taking 4 of them. The teacher wasn't sure of the breed, but I'm thinking they are Buff Orpingtons. They were hatched from brown eggs. I haven't had a chance to spend much time checking them out, but did get a couple pics. They are all mostly a...
We hatched this gal in my son's classroom last spring.
The lady that gave us the eggs said that the chicks were Araucanas. As our gal grew, it was looking more and more like she wasn't a true Araucana.
When I questioned the lady, she said that she has 2 Aracauna roosters, 1 RIR hen and 1...
Every once in awhile, we get an egg with a tiny, tiny crack in the shell or a small dent. They aren't crushed, just getting hit on the nesting box when the hens stand up and lay their eggs. The ones that are very cracked or dented we don't eat.
But, what about the ones with just a slight crack...
My RIR/Araucana hen (24 weeks old) usually lays nice brown eggs. For 2 days now, the eggs look like they have stretch marks on them and are spotted. Is that a sign of the shells being too thin? Our chickens get a grower/developer feed (17% protein) because only half are laying right now (all...
My husband just finished building nesting boxes on Friday. On Saturday afternoon, we found our first egg in the nesting box!
The question of the day...who laid it? We have an Araucana/RIR mix (Cutie) who is almost 21 weeks old, and EE (Daisy) who is probably a little younger and 4 BRs who are...
Aside from separating the hens, is there a way to tell who laid an egg when you have a flock of chickens in one coop?
I know you can often tell the egg by the breed of the chicken, but if you have more than one of a particular breed, who's the layer?
Curious to some guesses...
Cutie is about 3 months old... (pooped right as I took the photo...LOL). Tail feathers are pretty much all black.
Daisy is probably about 3 months old, but she was a found chick, so can't be sure... She wouldn't hold still long enough for a good picture.
Both...
Howdy!
Looking forward to learning all about raising chickens.
We have a 1 week old chick...
We were told Araucana, but since the eggs were brown, I'm pretty sure it's a mixed breed.
We are new to raising chickens, so I'm glad to have found this forum.
Here is our 1 week old chick...
We were told that "she" (I use that term in hopes that we have a female!) came from an Araucana hen and Araucana rooster, but there was also a barred rock hen in the coop. All of the eggs...
