Just wondering if anyone has a rainwater collection watering system in colder climates. If so, what do you do to keep it from freezing? I'm about to bust out the heater waterer, which I'm not a fan of. But it's gotta be done.
Thanks!
Hello all. I have four 12 week old EEs and 2 laying BRs close to 18 months. I have a few feeding stations set up, with the young hens feed in an area where they mostly go (higher up) and regular layer feed in the others. However, they all definitely eat each other's feed.
I read that layers...
Got us here 4 EEs, just about 8 weeks. We have 5 laying Barred Rocks outside, soon to be 2. We made some mistakes along the way with the first group, mostly space requirements. Even after remedying the issues, pecking persists so we are essentially starting over and gaining a few dinners.
So...
Good morning! My wife and I are considering adding 4 pullets to our flock of 5 barred rocks. Either EE or Buff orpingtons. I have a couple questions hopefully someone with more experience may be able to help with...
1) I have a small (smallll) coop that is 3x4 (see photo below... little red...
The pecking continues.... I have 5 barred rocks, and all seem to be pecking each other. I was just watching them and at least 3 out of the 5 were getting after it. The original coop I had was way too small, so I built them a new one. Nothing changed. Today I noticed its actually worse than...
I have 5 Barred Rocks, 3 with pinless peepers. Our current coop is way too small for them, and I'm in the process of building a bigger (6'x8') coop, and extending their run.
My question about the pecking, is when they move to the bigger coop, will the pecking stop or is that behavior there...
First off, I really love the advice and existing threads on BYC. That is one reason I want to start a thread following our new coop build. The advice, questions, experience and criticisms are an incredible resource. I read a few old threads and was directed to some by members that were very...
Good morning all-
We are wanting to expand out flock but need a bigger coop, and money is a bit of an issue. We considered building a bigger one, or buying a shed and converting, but so far the cheapest option may be a pre-fab metal shed. Then I would convert and insulate and vent.
Any...
Finally. Sheesh. Even though the BRs are only about 17-18 weeks.
Now.... How to get her and the rest when ready to use the nesting boxes? 🤔. The ceramic decoy eggs have been shuffled about, and there are chicken butt sized impressions in the boxes, but the first egg outside on the ground. Any...
I have 5 BRs that are about 17 weeks, or somewhere around that. I was doing work inside the coop today and one of them squatted for me. Pretty cool. First time. Looking forward to the first egg, finally. Free loaders I'll tell ya.
Anyway, when I was in there I found a dried up shell of a...
Mornin!! I have 5 BR hens getting on very well and a couple are getting nice red faces and dropping waddles. They are about 16 weeks now. I know we have some time yet before they start laying, although I've been told they may start as early as now. Not holding my breath though.
My...
I was wondering if anyone has had issues with a fisher before? There are, of course, horror stories and tales of how evil they are, primarily their eerie screams in the night. Well, one was eerily screaming a couple nights ago right by my coop. My set up is solid, but predators aren't dumb...
This is Becky, an alleged Barred Rock. She is about 8 weeks old. Way lighter than the other 4 BRs and substantially cooler. Bigger than the others though delivered in the same batch, exponentially more laid back and just generally awesome. She has the vibe of a BR, but isn't.
Any ideas??
Hello everyone. First time flock owner with 4 Barred Rocks and one mystery hen about 8 weeks old. They will primarily be in the enclosed and covered run, but I would like to give them yard time hopefully once a day. I'm looking for any tips or experienced advice for starting to let them free...
Hello! I have 4 BRs and a mystery pullet that was supposed to be a BR but is bigger and getting whiter/lighter everyday. They are almost 8 weeks now. I have been feeding the DuMor 24% chick starter since the beginning. I recently learned that I could have/should have been using 20% since...
Hello everyone. I posted this in the chick section but I'm hoping to reach more eyes. I read the picture guidelines but really only have these for now.
This barred rock pullet (hopefully pullet) is 6 weeks and looking exceptionally lighter than my 4 others. As a chick she had a very pale face...
Hello. This is one of my 6 week old Barred Rocks. He/she has all the field marks of a pullet... Dark wash on feet, longer tail, small comb still, squared off hackle feathers, etc. I don't know if these are totally diagnostic or just a guideline, or even correct at all. Maybe leucism? Either...
Attached pics!! Is our henhouse too dark? Not much light gets it through the 4" gable vents or when the small window is closed. I thought about putting in a small plexiglass window that would not be operable, open-able. Just a skylight sort of deal.
Just put our 6 week old Barred Rocks out...
Hello! I have 5 BR chicks doing great and getting huge very fast. My best guess is that they are about 5 weeks. Temps in the brooder now are between 72-75 and they spend their time in and out from under the heat lamp. It is still quite chilly here in NW Connecticut so I don't want to rush it...
Hi!! Our 5 Barred Rocks are growing very well and seem happy and healthy! Good to know after loosing a few due to an extra day in transit.
Anyway, I have a few shotty photos I am hoping the experts can take a peek at. I have a feeling I have a rooster in the mix, which would be unfortunate...
