I just got my first coop all up and running this year. My birds are about 10 months old now. Added doors, locks, screened windows, hardware cloth, got it all dialed in.........and now I've found this coop on Craigslist that I just can't live without! *sigh*
I'm loving this chicken farming and...
Hi there,
I have four chickens of various large breeds. They are about 10 months old and one has already gone broody. I'm loving this chicken business and already want more plus another coop! I was thinking that I'd prefer for a broody mama to do all my work and worrying for me this spring. My...
This was me in 1977 with my grandfather's "right-hand lady". (Full story in the What Breed is This? category.) It got me thinking, it would be fun to see other people's old photos of chickens back in the day. The older the better!! If you don't have a scanner, take a picture of your picture...
My Swedish Grandfather lived in Lewiston, Idaho and was an avid Shriner as well as master gardener. He had a fairly large backyard filled with his gardens and fruit trees. My grandmother canned all the food they could not eat to get them through the long Idaho winters. They lived across the...
Hi there,
We have about a half acre fenced property and as the weather gets cold and wet, I've noticed a lot of mushrooms popping up around the property. Most are the garden variety whitish ones, but we also have a ton of small brown bulbous ones which spew dark green fluid when pushed on. I...
We were having a professional family photo shoot in the backyard, so we thought it would be fun to take a few with the birds. We have four. My husband held his like she's dead, but they still turned out cute! We are chicken crazy.

My goodness, what a lot of work and I don't even want to know how much my fresh eggs cost, but the winterizing is done! We get a ton of rain in Oregon, so the run is lined with 5 inches of sand mixed with bark chips at the suggestion of BYC friends. They have a heated water dish, DE mixed with...
I finally bought a bag of DE because I've heard so much about it's magical powers. I thought it would look like dirt and boy was I surprised to find a white powdery substance. What I would like to know is, what all do you use DE for and how much to you use? I've heard adding it to the dustbath...
Hello,
I live in the rainy Pac NW and have a coop along side our house. They used to be on nice lush grass, but quickly trashed it all. I have some straw and pine shavings down, but as soon as the rain hits, I know it will be a mud bath. There aren't puddles, but we are a wet climate and there...
Hi all,
I live in Oregon and the rains have begun to set it. My chicken coop was surrounded by fresh green grass, but after the long summer, they grass is gone and all that remains is muddy hay. I would like to replace this with something. My birds don't seem to like sand all that much. I use...
I just bought 10 bags of paving sand to line the chicken coop and run. Is there any contraindications to doing this? I don't think it's been treated, but I'll check the bags first. Any one else use paving sand??
We're just starting to get eggs and I'm not sure what is the best way to wash them. So far both eggs have been clean looking, but I'm curious what you do? I'm guessing don't wash them if you leave them on the counter. Wash when ready to eat. What soap do you use?
I'm a new egger. Just got the first egg yesterday, but we were gone so I don't know what time it occurred. I want to leave the hens in the coop until the eggs are layed so they don't go laying them out in the bushes where i can't find them. I'm curious what time of morning your hens lay their...
It was a lung-sucking 100 degrees in Oregon today. My girls were looking so overheated, I decided to put them in the cool garage in their old chick brooder. MY HOW THEY'VE GROWN! ha ha ha I must say, I've heard nary a peep, they are so happy to be comfortable.
I love my chickens and would love to see your birds. I got what I think is an awesome picture of my girls taking a walk about. I love the back two who look like they are chatting away while they walk. What do you think they are discussing?
Let me see yours!
Summer's here and the run is dry, but covered in poop. They have shavings in the enclosed part and grass outside. I have a newer bale of hay sitting around and I'm thinking of either using it in the run over the grass or in the coop. I saw a post once where a hen ate a bunch of hay and they had...
She's bigger than the rest, smarter than the rest, and will take on anything. I'm worried she's a he! I'm looking for expert advice! She's 11 weeks old. Sorry for the picture confusion!
