After DH, the kids and myself going through what we just did this weekend, I do NOT want to have to deal with this issue again. I'm doing everything I can to prevent it in the future. That includes only purchasing stock from MG certified sources. It seems none of the big hatcheries are certified...
I'm sure this sounds like a ridiculous question, but I thought I'd ask, seeing I can't seem to find an answer myself.
Are fowl infected w/MG still safe to eat?
The one OE pullet that I hatched from your eggs earlier this year (the rest got snatched by a skunk earlier this year ) laid me some beautimous colored olive eggs in the last 3 days She finally decided it was time... and promptly picked a corner in the goat shed I went in to feed the goats...

6+ Bantam Barnevelder eggs!
These birds are very friendly, docile and beautiful! My two girls lay an egg a day each, even with the sweltering heat we've had here in Georgia. They have beautiful lacing, nice wide tails and type. And for their small size, they are hefty!
I will collect eggs...
So I know cocci is a protozoa and can have devastating effects, but I'm curious to know if its also something that can fit into a breeding program when one is breeding for resistance, say, when it appears some chicks have a mild case while others in the same area have no symptoms at all, the...
So... when I pulled the hatchers out on Sunday, this little bitty was quite a suprise! It has the chick coloring of a Barred Rock or similar... but the only eggs I've hatched are Delawares, Speckled Sussex, Olive Eggers (EE hens over Welsummer Roo) and a couple Buff OrpxWelsummer. So where did...
So I picked up a free Silkie a few days ago. She's a beautiful blue partridge. Poor girl was the only chicken, caged and absolutely infested with lice (eggs at the base of every feather shaft I could see, even head)
So I wormed and dusted her as soon as we got home, and she's in isolation for...
So I've got chicks hatching out right now, Speckled Sussex... (Homemade hatcher, cabinet style, temp holding at 99.1 about 1/3 of the way back into the tray and humidity at 60% )
I noticed something a bit strange... (Now, these eggs have all been in the same bator, moved to the same hatcher...
So, what are breeding muffs? I was browsing CL and saw em and it got me curious as to what they are/how they are used. Never even heard of them before....
Anyone know?
Silkie chick just picked up from TSC, looks to have one leg issue. The leg works, but she seems to have little control over it. It can bend and move freely (no locked joints, full range of motion) and sometimes the chick can pull it up under itself, but most often it seems to just straighten...
Well, I bought a cabinet bator, old homemade wood, a while back, for a steal of a price, thanks to a couple fellow BYC'ers!). All intact aside from wiring, heat element and trays. We got the wiring and heat element done. Set the top on and fired up the bator (turner and all) and it worked like a...
1 Blue Copper Marans and 1 Black Copper Marans, both pullets approx 27wks old for sale. Both laying. The Blue pullet has consistently layed double yolkers since she started laying several weeks ago. Neither lays super dark eggs, but they may darken as they lay more. Both have free ranged and...
Well, my EE, Runt, laid her first egg today! Its a purty light blue or green, depending on lightring! Now, she's a house chicken for the winter... and, well, she's taken to dustbathing in the litter box so guess where she decided to lay? Yup, you guessed it... litter box. Now, this is the...
So one of my nannies had twin kids in the wee hours this morning. By the time I got out there, the little buckling was almost dead. I thought, in fact, he was, so I checked on Mama and the other, a lil doeling. They're fine, bonded, nursing, all is well there. So I turned back to the lil...
She's been crowing the last few days Finally got a chance to get a short video... its sideways tho If ya click on the thumbnail, it'll take ya to view it
"Mommy, know why I'm crowing?"
"Nope hun, why?"
"I a ROOSTER!!!"
So this pullet is from a July hatch, Ideal Hatchery. She's right at POL, and I'm still completely lost on her breed. She's medium size, slate legs and the buff/black coloring. No eggs yet. She was part of a standard fowl, standard run batch I'd ordered.
So I put a bunch of eggs in the bator 18 days ago. Putting em into lockdown tonight, I smelt somethin awful. Found one of the eggs leaked Nasty stuff. Took that egg outside, very gingerly of course, set it down, and with arm outstretched, tapped it with a butter knife.. POP!! But no explosion...
