My chicks just went outside and had been in their coop for less than 2 days before the neigborhood hawk showed up. Could not find a way in so it left. I knew it would happen but didn't think it would be that fast. It was sitting on top of the coop before I could take a pic.
Finally after some years without chickens we got our start at another flock. Got ameracuana easter eggers, black austrailops, buff orpington and red star (sex linked). Now I have to get a move on finishing the coop.
Is it possible to feed meat birds starter feed (24% protein) or do they need specifically 21% protein. I have seen posts of people feeding game bird and turkey feed, both high percentage protein (~28%).
The reason is I cannot find broiler feed that is UNmedicated. All that the local coop...
So here's the deal. I got an email from a friend that knows we "do" chickens. The email is a forward from another friend that says she has 50 6 week old and 20 or so 4 week old broilers that she wants to give away. Yes, GIVE away as in FREE. I got ahold of her and said my momma told me if...
Since gas has gone down so has my feed bill from the co-op.

50# Hen scratch $6.80

This may be off topic but.... Does anyone know of or have info on getting fertile eggs for Cornish x rocks or the, much famed as of late, "Colored slow broiler" aka JM hatchery Red Bro or Freedom Ranger line? Does anyone sell hatching eggs? I was wondering if it would be cheaper to hatch my own...
Went to go check on the girls after I got home from work and what did I spy, 2 little eggs. I guess I should start calling them ladies now.
Here is a pic for ya.
Only 2 for now, hoping to get more from the other ladies. I only have 5 hens but that should be enough to support my family's...

Is FCR calculated on live weight or dress weight. I am trying to figure out how much a run of meat birds are going to cost and it is making a big difference in the feed needed if FCR is on live weight vs. dressed weight.
Thanks

Thought I would share what I found on the car today.
A baby praying Mantis. I wish I could have got something to show how really small this little critter is. It would really fit on my pinky fingernail. It was so tiny and cute. My wife had a had time taking pics of it because it was fearless...
Hello,
Here are a few pics of the tractor. The dimensions are 5ft. wide, 5ft. high, 10ft. long. Why that, I had extra tin roof from another project that is 10ft. long. It will house 6 hens (last pic).
Questions: I have not decided on a door type yet. For those with tractors do you close...

So I got my chicks yesterday (09Feb) (from the feed store, they are a week old) and was wondering when I can start giving them something other than "starter food"? I know they need there nutrition and such but we have alot of garden scraps that I know grown birds would love.
Any thoughts...
