good day fellow chicken farmers! been almost 15 years since i've had chickens....planning on building a new coop for a dozen new recruits. I'm in central florida so thinking of an open design appx 10'x10' w/ hardware cloth on the bottom half and chicken wire on the top. Can i get away with...
excuse my ignorance, this is my first go round raising chickens and I'm curious of my young brown leghorn rooster is supposed to have white ears and is getting white tail feathers, is this normal?
Purchased a precious little brown leghorn cockerel? (the old spanish fella at the feed store claims he can sex chickens by holding them upside down by their feet and if they flap they're pullets, if they dont they're cockerels?) Anyway, I guess he's around a week old and my hens are alittle...
finished my "chicken shack" this weekend and the girls really enjoy scratchin the ground and chasing bugs and being, well, chickens, and I really enjoy watching them. I say its finished but I havnt put a roof on yet, I leave the coop open and they go in and out during the day for water and feed...
Meet my four beautiful ladies, I'm so proud of them! They are three weeks old and have nice wing feathers coming in and roost on the branch I put in there:) Not trying to rush their age but I can't wait to get some eggs from these perty gals....

I did for just a few minutes today, I'm in central florida and right now the lows are in the high fifties and highs in the low eighties. My chicks are just under 3 weeks old and are doing very well. When I turned the lamp off they instantly bunched together and went to sleep. Should I give...
last years chicks fell victim to my blue tick so this go around i'm making a dogproof coop/run. Got a new flock of 4 last weekend and they are growing so fast! The red heat lamp really puts out an eerie glow at night:)

EE and RIR
my RIR 'acts' like a Roo but I can't tell what's what.
one more month till the bbq!
my chickens are alittle over 4 weeks old and are getting some perty feathers in, I had three but my buff orpington turned into a dog toy:( The RIR and EE seem to be doing well after i reinforced the chicken pen, would like to add a BO pullet if I can find one at a chicken swap meet.

framing out a new coop after work today in the 100 degree heat and 110% humidity of Central FL calls for an ice cold adult beverage. Lately i've been goin thru plenty of nattie lights but i think i'll treat myself to a sixer of newcastle to christen the coop:)
Henretta the RIR hopped up on the perch first then Ball the Buff and Peck the EE followed suit, I love watchin them chicks!
getting some feathers in...
pardon my ignorance but is there a glossary on this site defining all the different breed abbreviations? I have a RIR, BO, and EE so i know what those there are but i'm clueless on all the other breeds any help? (Here's another pic of my chicks since i posted this in the raising baby chicks forum)

"Sell these chickens before they die and the eggs before they hatch" ~ Hank...
