Found brown little critters crawling around the vent area of one hen!

I'm new to raising chickens so I have no idea what these are and how to treat. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We only have 3 hens and I clean their coop everyday, and they free range as well. Also, we are going on a 4 day trip tomorrow... will this hen be OK until we come back...

One hen started laying soft-shell eggs

Hello! I was hoping someone could tell me what's going on... The last 2 days, I've found egg yolk in the next boxes, and upon searching in the pine shavings I've found the remains of what seems soft shells. I have 3 hens and 2 of them are laying fine eggs. They all eat the same thing, organic...

How long do you keep your chickens?

Hello, I was wondering how many of you keep their chickens as pets and let them die of natural causes wether they are producing or not? A friend of mine came to visit and we showed her our 3 pet hens. She asked if we were going to eat or sell them after they'd stopped laying... we all answered...

Not a broiler... what is he?

It seems according to most people that my 4 month-old roo is not a broiler. It's very large (at around 10-12 lbs), but tall and not fat. He's been on restricted feeding all this time though. Some people think he's a White Jersey Giant but I don't think JGs have yellow legs. Any suggestions...

    Roo or hen?

We have a broiler (cornish x cross) we rescued about 4 months ago and for the longest time we thought it was a hen; however, I think it's a roo. What do you think? Sorry if this is an obvious question but I'm new to chickens

Question about EE and egg color

Is there a link between egg color and leg color? A friend mentioned that green legged EEs lay green eggs and that slate legged EEs lay blue eggs. Is there any truth in that? This is my first time raising chickens and we have a EE pullet with slate legs.

Just making sure I got this right :)

One of my hens is laying and we have 3 young pullets. I'm feeding all them grower feed and put out crushed oyster shell for the hen as she pleases. If I understand correctly, the pullets will not eat the oysters shells, even if it's available to them, right? I heard extra calcium in young...

    A little concerned?

My 8 month-old golden comet's comb is very drooppy although it's still bright red. She's acting perfectly normal, eating well, very active, feathers look clean and shiny, vent clean, laying eggs... I picked her up today to pet her as usual and I thought she "felt" a little lighter, or maybe it...

    Hen or Roo?

Hi everyone... we have a girl (we hope) that we rescued from animal control shortly before she was going to be put down. We've had her for over a month and she's a sweetheart! However, her looks and her growth rate have convinced us she's a Cornish X. I've contacted Farm Sanctuary who have been...
