Two loose Rottweilers broke through my fenced area today and killed 4 hens and severely wounded 2 others. I think one will die tonight but the other might make it. Put hydrogen peroxide on the open wounds. I am very upset. I saw the last part of the massacre as they lashed into my dear hens...
Just wanted to shout out my 6 year old hen, Floppy, a Black Star (sex link) who started laying again after her winter molt. Two days in a row so far. Last year she laid beautifully for months with one 18 day streak. She is a star! Anyone else have older hens still laying regularly?
About 3 weeks ago, Silver, one of my 3 year old production reds (hyline brown) looked ill. She was lethargic and not eating and had a full crop. I "vomited" her once. But it filled again. I segregated her for a day or two and then brought her into the "chicken hospital" in my guest bathroom. I...
Saturday a dog broke into my large wooded run and grabbed one of my hens. I chased him and he dropped her and she lost a fair few feathers on her back toward her tail but seemed to bounce back. She has laid eggs each day since then (she is the only one laying right now) and seemed to be perky...
I have 6 hens who usually produce 5-6 eggs a day. One was sick (egg bound) a while back and although recovered she seems to have stopped laying. But the other 5 have been producing all summer until now. We have a persimmon tree that drops nice sweet fruit everyday and I have been giving the...
Almost 2 weeks ago (Sunday July 15) I found my prettiest red hen, Ginger, lying on the floor of her coop. It was very hot and I put ice packs in the coop to cool things down. She looked worse at bedtime so I brought her in the house and made a chicken hospital in the guest bathroom. She huddled...
Yesterday morning I found my Hyline Brown (Rhode Island Red hybrid), Ginger, lying on her stomach on the floor of the coop around 8am. She looked to be in nesting position but very lethargic. Later she got up into her nest but then came down and spent the day huddled in one corner or another in...
My husband is a woodworker and works with lots of different woods. Are there some shavings that are a) great for coops; b) OK for coops; c) toxic or very bad for coops?
All input welcome, please!

Questions for y'all:
What is it that runs through hens' little brains and informs their decisions???
I have 3 "old" hens about 1-1/2 years old. About 4 months ago I introduced three 8 week old chicks. They have their own coop and were fenced apart (but within sight) for several weeks and then...
Yesterday our three 11 -12 week old Black Stars (rhode island red-barred rock hybrids) laid eggs!. I am out of town and my husband sent me photos - attached. I still find it hard to believe. They are about 1-1/2 inches long. They laid them on the floor of their coop - we hadn't even finished...
I have 3 hens (hyline browns) who are about 1 year old and have been laying brilliantly since last Thanksgiving. I get 3 perfect eggs almost every day. This morning I found 3 broken eggs with paper thin shells below their sleeping perch - not in their nests. This has never happened before...
Hello
I got 4 hyline browns on October 5. They were to be 22 weeks old. I was told they would start laying in 3-4 weeks. Well, here we are over 6 weeks later and no eggs. I am getting attached to the darlings, but no eggs. I am wondering if they don't get enough daylight? They are outside...
Hello fellow chicken folks
My husband and I have recently obtained 4 hyline brown hens with the objective of having fresh eggs.
We got them through the local extension service and know very little about their beginnings. They are 23 weeks old and we love them already. I have noticed that their...
