Howdy and happy holidays to all of you!
One of the ladies who buys eggs from us said she had a rusty red colored yolk. I have looked it up and it seems like it was probably just a blood vessel that popped or possibly something she ate that aided in the red coloring. Mostly, the girls have...
So, last week or so, the neighbors called and said they didn't want their 3 chickens anymore, they are low on money etc etc. Ok, We'll take them. (Thinking I will be adding to egg production since I have some molting/slowed down girls) Their coop is only about 30 feet or less from ours so I...
I was reading one of Gail Damerow's poultry books and some other sites around the tubes regarding chickens with long periods of molting, and there seems to be a consensus that they will not be good layers in the long run. I am going on at least 3 months of no eggs from my 2 hatchery minorcas...
I gave my broody hen 4 baby chicks last night and they are happy together. I think mama is a little surprised that those plastic eggs and golf ball turned into 4 chicks over night though.
One is hiding under mom here.
2 polish and 2 speckled sussex babies for my daughter.
Fun!
These were also hatched with the other on Father's day weekend.
This one has been looking extra pink in the comb for a bit.
Here's red's butt with the black one
Here's the 2 in question in the middle:
What do you think?
Trying to figure out what I have! Again! This one hatched a day or 2 after Father's Day. I think it might be wyandotte or wyandotte mix but I am not sure.
My daughter has decided she would like to take a chicken to the fair this year through 4H. I ordered a book on standards of perfection (and a book on chicken diseases) and it will come soon. I really have no idea about showing anything. And to add to it, her grandma (my mom) has decided she...

I'm getting closer to getting some meaties by the day. But first, a deep freeze must be purchased.
A few months ago both my neighbor's three chickens and my 13 came down with a case of fowl pox (or chicken chicken pox as the little one calls it.) I had 7 that were laying age at the time and the others were still in growing mode. Luckily, it seems we ended up with the dry variety of the pox...
So my lovely ee took care of her babies since father's day and today she decided she was officially finished with mom duties. We had mom and 4 chicks in a minicoop. We have two other coops that we keep hens, called the "big coop" and the "medium coop." The big coop houses the oldest 5 birds...
My black sex link gal was a few weeks when I got her in mid-November. I am still not getting an egg from her! I know all chickens are different, just like people, they mature at different rates but she is over 7 months. I thought black sex links were hybridized to start early. I really like...
I posted about this chicken a while back but it's bigger now so maybe someone can identify it better. This is Crow, nice chicken, not terribly flighty, low on the pecking order, I'm thinking pullet but not sure on breed if any specific, could be anything:
Here's Dotty, Cuckoo Marans maybe...
Alright, I had to find a forum to share my present that my family bought me. It's a chicken on a nest and the egg is my daughter's birthstone color. Seriously, this is very cute.
So, (it's like I'm on here every day) last night I noticed one of my girls was in the box (yay!) but it was late and she just started laying less than a month ago so I went to put my hand in there to give her a pet and check for eggs and she growled at me and pecked at my hand. I pulled the...
My barred rock, Stripey, was in the laying box when I left to go volunteer this morning for an hour at my daughter's school. When I came back and check for her egg, there was no egg, and I couldn't find her. I found her next to the run door. She wasn't moving. It looked like her head was...
Just finished our 2nd yesterday. The one on the left is the first one we built and for the second we decided to try a different design. What you can't see is the mini movable one that we also made for quarantine or for little ones. So I guess we technically have three. We have been attacked...
