Wood burning stove ashes.... good for dusting in?

I have a wood burning stove in my basement and typically just dump the ashes out in our outdoor burn pit when we clean it out. Would it be okay to give them to my chickens instead so they can dust in it? Just wondering if anyone has done this or heard of it being done? Thanks! :)

Please help me decide which BLRW Roo to keep!

I plan on keeping one of these roosters and possibly showing it in the future so please keep that in mind when picking your favorite. I'm new to chickens so I'm still learning on what to look for and what to avoid when it comes to breed standard. Do I need to wait a couple more weeks for more...

Little Red Barn coop & run! LOTS of pictures!

DH started building this coop for me 3 months ago and there are still just a few things left to finish on it such as remove the strapping from the roof (we have high winds here on the SW shore of NS!) and possibly tar the shingles, finish painting the front deck, add poop boards, add a few more...

7 week old chick with feather loss

I hope someone can help. I have eight, 7 week old BLRW chicks in my brooder. Yesterday I bought a new feeder and started them on poultry grower feed as suggested by the feed store. Also, seeing as how they have all of their feathers in, I figured it would be okay to remove the heat lamp (red...

How many chickens can I have??

I hope I'm posting this in the correct area! If not, my apologies! I was just wondering... my coop is 6x6, will have a 12x12 run and the chicks will be able to free range as well. How many chickens could fit comfortably without being TOO crowded? I have eight, one week old BLRW's and am...

    new chick with swollen/enlarged eye

I just picked up my chicks today and noticed that one of them has a swollen/enlarged eye. It opens the eye some, but mostly keeps it shut. He/she is very active, eating and drinking, etc.. There is no discharge from the eye but I wiped it with a soft, wet cloth. Is there anything I should...
