It has almost been a year since the blog started and it is still going strong! With the hatching of 17 new chicks and about 40 hatching in the next couple of weeks, this spring is sure to be filled with stories and pictures. Thanks for helping to keep it going, and if you haven't had a chance...
I posted this earlier today in another forum but have a question for the quail wranglers that may be online. Because of college and the holidays I actually forgot I had 6 quail eggs in the incubator until the day they were due to hatch. As the humidity was at 40% and the turner was still...
I only have one breeding pair and they recently began laying eggs, so I figured why not go ahead and incubate them. So, 12 went in to the Brinsea incubator yesterday. I figure I can collect and put a new batch in every week then, when it's time, take them out and put them in my hovabator to hatch.
Hello everyone,
I noticed I had a male quail that was missing his tail feathers and his butt looked bloody where he was being pecked, so I pulled him out of the covey to heal and now notice another male with the same problem. There are 12 georgia giants - about 4 months old in a wire...
We recently got a few Georgia Giants ( 4 males, 8 females) and boy they are flighty! Not that it is a bad thing necessarily, just surprising. At the same time we aquired a pair of vally quail. They are not nearly so flighty. Are there some quail species that are naturally less flighty...
generally speaking, how long can a hen produce "fertile" eggs after being mated by a rooster? In other words, once a hen and rooster mate, and the rooster is taken away, how long would the hen's eggs be fertile?
I went out into my pen this afternoon and found one of my 9 week old hens had gotten stuck between a crate and the fence. At first I was worried about one of her wings ( it had gone through a hole in the fence) but it is fine. What is wrong is that she cant or wont put weight on her left leg...
Now granted not everyone is happy about a broody, for me it's a mixed bag. On the one hand as she is our first broody, I am a little excited to see what will happen. I mean let's face it, what in the world is cuter than baby chicks??!! The broody is sitting on 9 or 10 eggs and has been for 5...
Being new to chicken genetics- it's going to take me some time to digest I am curious if the Splash is always a combination of black and white feathers? And if Blue X Blue is how you get Splash, would it be possible to add another color like red or gold, etc? I hope that question makes sense.
I have been looking at incubators to use for some RIR eggs until my cochins get old enough to take care of them for me. I came across a GQF model 2362N that I can get for $50. Any one have this model or should I pass this up? Any other suggestions on beginning incubators would be welcomed!
Hello Everyone! We just got our group of 6 day old cochins. I am looking forward to learning new things and hearing other's share thier stories. I'll post a picture as soon as I figure out how LOL.
