there are now rats in the coop. we have a coop with a run but i leave the door(s) open so the girls can get in and out while they free range...i guess that's how the whole problem started. this morning i checked the nest boxes for eggs and found a rat. what do i do now?
i got a small...
I can't believe how exciting it was to find that little brown egg! Right on time - they are 22 weeks on Monday. I don't know who did it but can't wait until the others follow suit!
ours is the one on the left...
i had 5 hens and introduced 2 new ones...they're all pretty young - around 16 weeks or so, the 2 new ones might be a month younger. the two groups do NOT get along but at least they were all going into the coop together at night. now all the big girls are sleeping on a perch outside in the run...
i have 5 hens that are 12 weeks old. i just brought home two more that i think are probably closer to 8 weeks. they are NOT getting along. they did manage to all finally get into the coop for bed, though. right now it's the original 5 ganging up against the new 2. they free range during the...
forgive me, i'm new at this...
so someone just told me that my birds are not going to lay until next year. i have buff o's, rir's and wyandottes that are currently 12 weeks old. i was under the impression that they were going to start laying eggs in late october (around 21/22 weeks) and...
Almost positive it's a roo and will be so sad to see him go (still waiting for that first crow). Looking to sell for $5 or trade for a pullet. Please PM me. Thanks!
I live in Fairfield County CT and this is my first time raising chicks. They're coming up on 10 weeks old and I'm pretty sure I have a roo. What do people usually do with them? Craigslist? Find a farm in the yellow pages? I have no idea... Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
They've been in the coop since they were 2 weeks old and they spent their first night without the lamp (at almost 6 week old) last night because it's been so hot and humid here. However, it's supposed to go down to 60 tonight and I'm wondering if this is ok. They seem to be pretty feathered...
What is best? Sand? The grass is gone and the poop is building up. I read somewhere on this site that sand is best and the poop can be raked out. Is this right? Thanks!
Chicks are 5 weeks old and one of the buff's def. looks different from the rest - bigger and more comb and waddle going on - and seems to have a different "peep" than the others. Also, he/she is the least timid of me when I'm in with them and always the first to escape out of the run if the...
not sure if this is the right place to post this...i know i saw it somewhere on this site but can't find it. my local feed store does not sell food grade. i'm planning on using the deep litter method (with DE), however, i just read today that the deep litter method should not be used in small...
I'm very new to this and am going to attempt to build the run this weekend. I was wondering if I could lay the wire flat on the ground and have it come out under the run a foot or two instead of burying it. Then I could just build a simple frame and plop it down over the wire. Does that...
I just bought an Amish chicken coop and it's great. My chicks are only one week old and haven't moved in yet. There is a bench-like thing with mesh/wire/netting over it that I am assuming is a roost. Is this ok or do they really need a pole/stick to roost on? Sorry...very new at this. Thanks!
My 6 chicks are a week old and the coop is almost ready. I've read that they're supposed to stay indoors until they are fully feathered (about 6 weeks?). Does this apply in the summer too? I was hoping to get them out into the coop as soon as possible. Can I run a cord and keep the heat lamp...
It's going to be HOT in CT today. Can I keep the 6 day old chicks out it a pen (in the shade) today? They love being outside and was wondering if they could handle it for a couple of hours since it's going to be the temp they need under the lamp anyway...
