    New hen: foamy eye

We got two new hens last Friday (4 days ago) and noticed today that one has a foamy eye. I've been reading around and this appears to be a respiratory infection, and I hear it's highly contagious. Of course all the hens are stressed because of the two newcomers. This is a young hen (with...

Where to buy button quail chicks, Indiana

Hello, We've been looking at the button quails and want to get some in a month or so. Most places online seem to sell eggs, not chicks for obvious reasons. But, it seems to me that fancy (expensive) incubators are needed to hatch them. We want a few (6 or less) chicks. I'm located in Indiana...

    Brahma Bantams - I think?

I picked up these two chickens yesterday - the seller said he was pretty sure they were "Brahma Bantams." The speckled one has feathered feet, but he said they both hatched from the same batch. What do you think they are? This first one looks a little "rooster-ish." could possibly be a...

RIP Apple, sweet little hen, and pet

Yesterday "Apple," our little hen died. She was 7 weeks old, and sour crop got to her. She spent the last few days weakly trying to eat tomato bits. We buried her under an old apple-marked stone today near the new coop so that she can be close to her sisters.

6 week old hens, multiple "bloated crop" cases - what's wrong?

My 6 hens are now 6 weeks old and there has been 2 cases of "bloated crop." I do not think it should be this common. These are soft crops, no bad smell that I can sense. When I make them vomit, it's just chick crumbles and water. These crops do not empty overnight, but only grow larger and...

1 month old chick with blocked crop: Update: surgery

About 4 days ago "Daisy" started to develop the large breast - so we started watching her. After reading around I figured she had an impacted, or sour crop. Her crop is large, but soft, just like a water balloon. you can see her bulging skin beneath her baby feathers. The day before...

My coop idea: run under deck

What do you think of this idea: We're about to get 5 hens. Out back we have a pretty large wood deck that sits about 3' off the ground. I am thinking about walling it up with some wire and making it a "run for when we want to keep them out of the yard." I am thinking of making a smallish...

What do do on vacation - how long can chickens stay in their coop

Hello- We don't own any chickens yet, still doing research... Given a freshly cleaned coop, automatic waterer and feeder, how long can chickens stay in their coop? Obviously I'm guessing it's not ever recommended, just looking at our options. Sometimes we go places over the weekend and rarely...

    Hello from Indiana

Hey all. I'm from Carmel, Indiana. They don't allow any farm animals here unless you have 3+ acres. However, these are hard times and I believe we as free Americans should be able to raise a few quiet, unobtrusive birds if we want, and I am not above breaking this pointless city ordinance. I'd...
