I got my new chicks today, didn't expect them, so no brooder set up at first. I had to take them with me on errands (OH temps) and finally home to sit while I wipped together a mock up brooder. Well one was over on his side, eyes closed, not with the group. I tried to get him warm, but he...
So I was curious as to whether my eggs where fertile. I butchered my barred rock roo well before my girl started laying. She's been laying for a week, the eggs are in the fridge, and there is a frizzle banty roo and a few cockerels (20-24 weeks old) . So I cracked an egg and got one with a bulls...
Spent months raising this flock, just to hear another crowing birds day before yesterday. I've been trying to leave them be, not harassing them about eggs. And it's been pouring, so they've been fed, watered and in the coop. Well I found another roo, and took another look at them all, and the...
Here's the new coop, much bigger than the old, holds 13 birds, 11 barred rock, two bantam cochins. Dad put the timer on the back patio light so I'm all set.
Can't find the Barred rock thread. Where do I get heritage barred rock, or at least something besides hatchery stock. I've checked the web for weeks, can't find anything but a few eggs. If I have to I'll hatch, but I would prefer chicks or pullets.
Anyone know any breeders? The contact info...
I have four flood lights on my house near the coop. The first set is about 10 feet from the coop, shining into the east side, they are 60 watt lights. The second set is shining into the south side, about 2 feet above the coup and 6 ft away. There is enough light that I can see the chickens on...
I breed dogs, so I am a serious student of genetics.
I have two hens ( I think). One has the body of a barred rock, but it is buff/barred with white feet.
The other has the feathers of a BO, but it has yellow feet.
There's a barred rock, buff orphington thing going on here.
I would like...
These too look like they have the same banding on their necks like the barred rocks. Maybe they are Orphington crosses? Looks like the barred rock rooster covered every hen in the mixed flock, hehehe...
I saw some picts somewhere of adults hens that have combs and waddles like this. Mind you it's only 8 weeks old, and the other two have considerably smaller combs. I tried to look for picts of saddle feathers and hackles, but the picts were not there (on the forum). What do you think?
There are 2 approx 6x8 windows in the door, a 6 x12 vent in the side, and 2-3 inches around the roof that is just mesh. On the bottom under the nest box is an 1 1/2 inch gap I use to sweep poop out of.
There are several misc buckets laying around the yard, mostly dog drinking buckets. The chicks were out while I was cleaning, inspecting everything, hopping up on buckets and drinking from dog dishes. When I went to put them back in the coop, I found I was missing one. Two days ago one got...
My first pass at it. I build dollhouses, and this is not like a dollhouse!! First a dollhouse usually comes with all of the pieces cut, I have not power tools except a drill, so I had the guys at home depot do it, and when I got home, well the sides were way off!!! So I hand sawed a few...
I'll get more picts tomorrow. Meanwhile I have 13 Cochins-- five standard and eight banties, (seven are frizzles). I think the buff (?) cochins, the one in the front, are hens, but the big black ones look like roos. Then I have a few of the frizzles is noticable red combs.
Hello from Ohio. I'm a third grade school teacher, and I got some eggs and an incubator from my sheep herding instructor (more on that) for my school. Had 22 eggs, hatched 13, 4 weren't fertile, on Mother's Day. I have 5 Cochin and 8 bantam cochin chicks, seven of those are frizzles. I...
