I have 5 BPR hens that just turned a year old and have been in great health. One hen today I noticed sitting down and it struck me as odd, but I didn't really think about it until later this evening. My girls free-range and I saw four of them doing their usually walk/sweep of the lawn...where...
So, today ends the journey for my first rooster, Pippin. His aggressive antics have won him a one-way trip to the broiler. Now, I liked having him around and would have put up with him if it were just me, but I have two children under the age of three and I didn't want to take any chances. My...
Friday morning, my husband ran a fox off, but not before the fox tried to take one of the hens. He had her in his mouth, but when my husband chased him, he dropped her. She lost a lot of feathers and was shaken up, but I brought her in the house and put her in a big cage. She rested for the...
My husband called me this morning to tell me about the "conversation" the chickens were having in the yard. And then he attempted to mimic the chatter. I had a good laugh. I wonder if anyone has actually studied the language of chickens....like they have whales or apes.....hmmmmm
Okay, I got a rooster because I planned on free-ranging my flock and wanted that healthy added protection, but since my rooster is becoming a "man" he's turning into a real jerk. As I was walking away from the flock with some treats in hand, the little *&^%%$ whacked the back of my knee and drew...
So, I am anxiously waiting the first eggs from my BPR hens any day now. They were hatched June 6th, 2011. Their combs and wattles are in various degrees of maturity, which is kind of weird since they were all hatched on the same day....but anyway. So, there I was, in the yard, in shorts since it...
Some updates to the coop and some pics of my roo and the girls;

Handsome Rooster to be;
More stones/less mud;

The nesting boxes in waiting;
The golf ball eggs;
We're finally getting to building the run. Here's our hard work from today. I'm also including the pics showing the newly mounted roost and automatic chicken door, which by the way, is the coolest thing.
And Pippin, eating up some bugs in the lawn!
So I took a chance today and left for work without herding the flock back into the coop while I was gone for the day. Good news, they all were safe and sound when I returned this afternoon. Well, they weren't entirely unsupervised....The contractor rebuilding our deck was at the house. He...
Since I'm new to the chicken world, maybe you've all seen this before, but I had to share this fantastic blog;

This is true talent.
I was very exited today to let the flock out of the coop for the first time. We're still in the process of constructing the coop and the run, but I really wanted them to get out and feel the grass under their toes! The pics are at the end of my blog. Enjoy...
Hi there. I've been posting the progress of the coop build as it goes on. This weekend was a HUGE step. We were able to move the birds into the coop. And we did it at 10:30pm. They took it fairly well. I think it's because they were half asleep already. Please check out the pics at the end of my...

I'm trying to decide on how to power up the coop we're building. See my BYC page. Anyway, I was thinking that it would be nice to use solar to power a light, a water heater and for those really extra cold New England Winter nights, an oil radiator space heater. Any suggestions?
