Roo or hen?Pretty sure about the roo, but not about the hen...

I think this is the roo - upright gait and wattle development. Now here is the hen, I desperately hope: No wattles, thinner legs, less upright posture. Not pecking at others. S/he has a long tail, but may be a phoenix? The roo is a cochin, silver laced...

Full crops in chicks - add grit?

I know that chicks don't need grit, but my 4 week old chicks have very full crops on a diet of only medicated chick feed. It won't hurt them if i give them some grit, will it? They ate it up very quickly. Don't remember if my previous chicks had full crops at this age...

Am I gonna really have to vaseline their combs??

'Cuz I will, but if I don't need to, that will be fine by me! We are supposed to go down into single digits here (Mass) tonite, and I'm worried about the girls. They have not gotten bit yet, but it's been very mild out here so far. What do all you folks do??

    Black on tips of comb...

My girl Ozzy has black on the tips of her comb. She has had this for a long time, before the cold weather. No one else has had this (5 other hens) until recently - now one other hen has the same thing. Don't think it's frostbite, because it's been around since before the cold weather...

full crop - how big is too big?

How big is an impacted crop, and when does it become an emergency? A few of my girls have very full crops all the time. When is it considered impacted? I try to massage them when I pick the girls up, but the stuuf in their crops doesn't seem to move. They have access to grit - smallish, in...

    Wet hens... is it okay?

It's really rainy here. Their coop is pretty water tight. They have all day access to their run - is it okay that they are getting wet? Like, how wet is too wet? Will they freeze at night if it gets cold? They are probably okay, but just checking... Thanks!

    Pink poop?

Someone is pooping pink. Looks just like the other poops, just pink and white instead of grey and white. Could this be an indication of getting ready to lay? BTW - they aren't eating anything red or pink - just their feed. Thanks!

Okay - is this a boy or a girl, or both?

    Newbie!

Hi all! I'm a new chicken farmer - lol! I got chickens because I love animals, and what a bonus to have animals that give back more than love! My hens (pullets?) are still pretty young - got them in May 2011. I have 6 - 5 of them are definitely Buff Opringtons, one is a bit of a mystery...
