Looking for simple straight forward wording to present to town regarding keeping of chickens for non-commercial private family pets. We have something already on the books but specifically says no roosters. For those of us who keep a rooster for their watchful eye over the hens...any ideas...
How did you originally find them? My birds are looking a little scraggly but I don't see anything on them at all. I used Poultry dust in the coop just in case...
Ok, so I have 2 7 month old roosters. One an EE, the other a NH who is a GIANT bird. The past few days the NH has been raising his hackle feathers at me and jumping at me when i am near them. So today i go in to collect the eggs and while trying to avoid Dylan the NH, Beast the EE attacked...
That is my plan....if I can figure out how to work it into the coop design i already have. I have some packets of "chicken salad" seeds to put in the resting paddocks which are supposed to be quick growing. I love your coop set up and am totally jealous of your climate! We travel to Hawaii...
Ok, so my run is a huge mud pit and I am tired of throwing in pine shavings just to watch them get all muddy and nasty after a few days. I am toying with the idea of putting some poultry netting around my current set up and sectioning it off into paddocks which the girls can rotate through. I...
I keep a large plastic container with a lid in the fridge. Through out the day I add any scraps for the girls and the eggshells that go in there are nuked for 2 minutes so they crumble easier.
I have been using this door since September. I did have an issue with the solar panel not charging enough when the days got shorter, and after a phone call to the company they quickly talked me through resolving the issue. I only needed to add an additional solar panel to charge the 12v...
I have 6 nesting boxes, and I put 3 dummy eggs in one box and 3 dummy eggs in another. The girls lay their eggs in either of the two boxes that had the dummies. I've since taken out the dummies, but the girls still lay in the same 2 boxes only.
I'm not crazy....but I just went out to the run to distribute some fresh aspen shavings (to cover the wing deep mud from all the rain) and the chickens poop was turquoise! I did give them a head of purple cabbage so I am thinking that can account for the change. Has anyone else noticed a...
teach,
I really only have the roosters because that's what I ended up with. I only wanted hens to begin with but since we've had them since day one, we are very much attached. I don't need fertilized eggs since I have no intentions of hatching eggs myself. That being said I do like the way...
I noticed that one of my EE hens Emily has a bare patch just above her tail feathers. The area is about 3 inches long and 2 inches wide. I am pretty sure it is from too much attention from one of our roosters. I just ordered two saddles online, but it will take a few days to get here. Has...
Morning! My chickens are in a permanent run and as expected have destroyed any thing growing on their side of the fence. It seems like the best way to get them on some green is to move them from pasture to pasture. I'd need to do this on a small scale (20x20). I am wondering if anyone has...
The white spots are slightly raised, but can't be scratched or washed off. I'm thinking calcium? The pullet just started laying, this is actually her fourth egg. She is not getting any supplemental calcium other than what is in the food. She is getting regular organic layer pellets, and...
I have read that chickens lay every 26-28 hours, which I think should mean that each day the time of lay will get later and later until she skips a day. I also have read that they only lay in the mornings, but I just found an egg that was laid around 3:30. Just wondering if collecting at the...
