I think you need some kind of protection other than a covered roost. Even a dog house would work if you built a door and shut then in at night. Something like that could work. Sorry I'm not much help.
thanks everyone I will give it another try. She is not the only chicken at the nature center, but she never "hangs out" with one in particular, so I don't know who I would keep her with. I wanted to keep her in a dog kennel in my house, but I guess my mom didn't understand that part. Oh well...
Yeah, thanks. But the only reason I took her was because the Nature Center is selling all their chickens to farms where 1/2 will be egg layers and the other 1/2 is cat and dog food. I knew this chicken since she was a baby and I don't want her to be cat and dog food.
Today I took home my first chicken. She is from the Nature Center that I work at. My mom and our friend and I went to pick her up. I held her in the car as we drove to my neighbor's house - she already has a coop and we were gonna keep my chicken there for a while. So when we put her in, my...
Ok, I know you don't need to bathe a chicken, but I'm asking this just in case I do. When you wash chickens, do you use soap or shampoo? Or do you just rinse them with water? Also, do you use any kind of washcloth or just your hands?
Thanks!
YAY!!!
Just one question: Meeko is a little more than a year old, and my neighbor's 3 hens don't lay yet - they will soon. Because Meeko is older, will she peck or be nicer to the others? Or will she just think, "Oh...chickens..." and not care?
Ok, I work at a nature center and they have a bunch of ugly, mean, bald chickens. Now that it's spring, they're gonna get rid of the big chickens and hatch chicks.
1/2 of the chickens they sell are going to other farms because they still lay a lot of eggs. The other 1/2 is going to be eaten...
Is there a feed store near Stamford CT? I want to be able to go and pick out my chicks since I'm only getting 3. I don't want to ship them or anything. So does anyone know where there is a feed store that I can get sexed, baby chicks? Anywhere near Stamford CT??
Help is appreciated!
Ducklings are messier then chicks, so if you did put them together, you would need to clean the brooder a lot more than you would've with just plain chicks. Also, ducklings need to swim and they would get water everywhere while they swam. You're chicks might catch diseases and die if they live...
I am going to get three standard-sized chicks. I have a whole coop/run planned in my head - but before I build it I need to check with you guys!
Does this sound good:
4 by 3 ft. hen house- 4 square feet per bird.
4 by 4.5 ft. run- 6 square feet per bird.
Also, how much space should each chicken...
Wow, I would go out of my mind if that happened to me!! Do you have enough space for 80 chicks?? I would help you out but I live in Connecticut...
Good luck raising/selling your babies.
Welcome!!
I would suggest holding your rooster upside-down by his feet. That will let him know that you're the one in charge. He's probably just worried about your hen, but he will learn that you can take care of her.
Thanks everyone! I have a really good book on how to take care of chicks/chickens that I've been reading almost every night. I'll tell my mom your ideas and I think they will work!
I'm sooo excited because my neighbor is getting chicks on May 4!! I really want only 3 little chicks. But...my mom isn't completely convinced. She keeps saying: "Oh, your excited about getting chicks - that will live down the street." Grrrr! My dad is all for the idea, he wants the poop!
So...
well, I'm not sure about where you live but the laws for me say a coop must be 50 feet away from any houses. If you're allowed too, I gues you can put one next to your house. It might get a bit smelly.
As for cats - If the birds are full grown I don't think a cat will be a problem. But baby...
