I am sorry for your loss. Our girl who died was also one of the healthiest, most active hens and hands down the best forager. We were shocked that it happened to her. She was one of a kind. like a dog.
Thanks for the replies and advice. She just walked out of the nest box after laying a perfect egg and out the run door to join the others in free time. When she ran out she just stopped and sat down and faded away in a few minutes. I already built a box and buried her in the back forty. I...
She is otherwise healthy and well in appearance and behavior. Her last egg fell out on the ground and was thin shelled and more round than a typical egg shape. We have checked to see if she is bound and there is no egg. I look around every day for evidence of egg eating and there is none. I...
I meant that osprey only, meaning exclusively, eat fish like they do not eat dogs cats chickens rabbits and such. Only fish. Eagles eat chicken, fish, vermin, roadkill, and even little dogs. Osprey will not hurt land animals.
Yes she has been fluffing her feathers when I let them out of the run to roam around in the sun. They were pecking at some oatmeal i put out and juicy started puffing up sitting still kind of crouching when my slw started pecking at her out of nowhere. You think its cause she's broody? I'm...
My chickens are only six mos old but they seem to be the opposite of the usual characteristics for their breeds. My BO's seem to dominate the order right now, and up until now My SLW has acted like she thinks shes a BO. My 2 RIR's are at the bottom and 2 brahmas in the middle. weird. But...
I guess I got lucky with my RIR's I have two and they are super nice. Juicy has been fleeing from the presence of my slw silver, avoiding eye contact and running away. I think today silver climbed up a notch in the pecking order.
My SLW hen Silver was pecking at my BO hen Juicy today. I wonder if silver is taking the fluffing the wrong way like when a roo fluffs up his hackles. I think silver is trying to be boss hen I just don't want all of the hens to turn on juicy. There are five others all hens seven all together...
Here is the page for our chicken coop! We are located on whidbey island in Washington state. We built it to house 10 - 12 chickens fairly comfortably. We currently have only 7 girls all large breed but it looks like ten would fit well once full grown. We do it for the eggs and the enjoyment...
