    Getting ready to move

If you can put up some temporary fencing to make them a small run, that should work. When I'm training chickens to go into their coop, I will often put a light on inside for them. It can help lure them in. Sometimes there is no way around having to go out and scoot them in in the evening.

We are very new to chickens, ours were purchased as day olds in mid-June. They have been a delight, and I can't believe that I waited until now to get them. A friend of mine has been providing us with eggs (the "good eggs" as our kids say), but it is hit and miss on when we can get them. Our...

    Our Coop

Our coop and attached run: As much as possible we used recycled materials, either given to us or purchased from our local Habitat for Humanity. The windows, front doors, and nest box door are all cabinet doors purchased for a few dollars each at habitat. The crown moulding is also from Habitat...

I think that my duck has bumblefoot but during surgery not so much

Okay, so my duck was limping this morning and we took a look at her feet. One spot looked a lot like bumblefoot. Black scab, hard swollen spot, the works. We put some antibiotic on it and her little hot pink shoes. I research ad nauseam and prep for surgery tonight. I did look around for...

Any amature landscape designers out there? **UPDATE - PICS ADDED**

Quote: My gardens are mostly perennials, but I do like to fill in spots with annuals. I just don't think that I could have a garden without zinnias. That said, if you use annuals they are mostly pretty easy to grow from seed. You can get a lot of bang for your buck that way. Especially...

    Yeah...I think I'm funny.

I'm so glad that this chapter in your life is closing. I know that you will always have to deal with the wretch, but at least he's not your wretch anymore.

Any amature landscape designers out there? **UPDATE - PICS ADDED**

Quote: Sunset's Western Garden book is fabulous. You could also go to your library and check out some past years' "Sunset Western Garden Annual" books. It's a compilation of the year's gardening articles in Sunset magazine. I have gotten more information out of those books then from any...

    Tax refund delay

I used an online software for my taxes. As we itemized, I was told that they will simply hold onto my return and file it on the 14th when the IRS is accepting them. This was due to last minute changes by Congress to the tax code. I'm not too worried about it, my info didn't all come in until...

Any amature landscape designers out there? **UPDATE - PICS ADDED**

Penstemon is a beautiful drought tolerant perennial, they bloom from spring to fall. Another winner is Mexican sage, it can get HUGE in full sun and is very drought tolerant. Mexican primrose is a sweet flower, but it can be invasive so plant with care. Euphorbia is a lovely plant that does...

Anyone ready to ring in the new year...and lose weight/get fit?

Quote: Elizabeth, I haven't read all of the posts from you here, but I was wondering if you have had your thyroid checked? Do you know if there is a medical reason?

Valentine's Day and I am stumped

I usually just make a nice dinner for us. Andy (my DH) is definitely tummy oriented, though.

Anyone ready to ring in the new year...and lose weight/get fit?

Quote: Thank you for the words of encouragement, vfem and wildorchid. Wildorchid, it sounds like you are on your way to changing your habits. I have had a few bouts with being obsessive to the point of anorexia, it's a scary place for me to have my mindset. There is a problem when you revel...

Anyone ready to ring in the new year...and lose weight/get fit?

I have been losing some weight, around 5 pounds in the past month. I'm not dieting, per se, just changing my relationship to food. I have a lot of weight to lose, but I'm not setting a goal weight and I'm trying not to focus on it at all. If it takes 6 years to get down to a healthy weight...

I don't want to hurt my friend, but...

Quote: This is very true, in all of the arts. The trick is to walk that fine line between constructive criticism (critique) and just plain trashing. There is an art to critique and it requires thought and really analyzing what is and is not working in it, and why.

    Well, drats

Quote: Wow, Writer, that is wonderful that you have had so much time with him. Though I'm sorry that cancer is rearing it's ugly head with him again. I do understand not wanting to put him through treatments again. There comes a time where we have to weigh quality of life with quantity...

    Well, drats

Thank you so much for the well wishes. It's been a bit surreal. Strangely, it seems less stressful when you have a whole bunch of things at once. It's as if there are too many things to focus on and obsess about. I was very concerned about my brother (we are very close), but I know that he...

    Well, drats

I took my dorkie old beagle to the vet today and found out that not only is the lumpy spot on his leg cancer, but that he also has a mass in his abdomen. Plus, his back issue (a compressed disk) is acting up again. He still seems happy and to be enjoying his favorite things in life - us and...
