It is day 23. I candled my remaining eggs in bator. I saw the air pockets, so I opened eggs (carefully!) and chicks were fully formed with the yolk sac still attached. The power went out on day 17 for 12 hours. I'm so sad. I DID get 3 chicks to hatch. but about 10 that didn't. I have 3...
We had way too many roosters (hence, we butchered them last week), and my poor hens are just bald on their backs. It looks terrible, they seem to feel fine. When and how long does it take for feathers to grow back??
I roasted one of our birds last night. It was a little tough. Maybe I should brine it? The bird was older, about a year, and free-ranged, which I've heard can make meat tougher since they are using the muscles a lot. I like chicken prepared all ways, but roasting is my favorite. Any tips?
I had been dreading butchering our roosters for a long time, so today we finally did it. It was not as bad as I thought it would be and I'm so proud of myself and my husband!! We didn't take pics, we had our hands full! I'm glad it's over!!!
My chick is 1 week old. From the start she has been bending her neck around and scratching at her ear areas. She seem off balance and sometimes falls over. At other times she seem perfectly normal. I was reading posts on wry neck. Is this the same thing? What about the scratching at...
Only 5 chicks hatched, and being day 23 I decided to investigate. I candled and carefully opened an egg. It was a gooey mess. No chick at all. Does this mean it was not fertile? I did get the 5 chicks. I can't understand!! They were all in incubator together under same conditions. Thanks...
All eggs were started on the same day. I still have 15 in the bator and not one of them has pipped!! 2 hatched a little early, the last hatched yesterday about 3pm. Just wondering if it is normal for hatches to "stagger" so much, or maybe my eggs are bad.
My day old chick is in the brooder but just keeps acting strangely. Looks like it's trying to "preen" its tummy over and over and then just flops on its back. Also shaking some. I have lamps on brooder and other 3 chicks seem to fine with the temp in there. Any suggestions?
I am hatching out some eggs and already have a 1 year old flock. I was talking to the Extension agent, and she told me under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should I mix in my new birds. WHAT!? It never occured to me (duh) that this would be a problem. Now I am panicking over having to build a second coop...
I have 2 of 19 eggs hatched. They've been out for about 6 hours now. They are starting to look mostly fluffy, but they are panting. Is there such thing as having the bator too hot? The temp says about 100. Thanks a lot!!
My buff cochin hen wants to sit on a golf ball all day. I stick my hand under her and she doesn't object. I don't believe she has laid eggs for days. Is this broodiness?
If a bantam egg has been fertilized by a big rooster, will the egg hatch, or will the chicken be too large to fit in the egg? This sounds unbelievably stupid, but I can't get it out of my mind.
So far my EE's have laid green, my bantam has laid a creamy egg, and then today we found a dark brown egg. The only other 2 types of hens I have left are Wyandotte and Buff Cochin. I am trying to figure which one laid this brown egg. The cochin has been squacking her head off for 2 weeks, so...
I sent my husband to get feed yesterday. So he fills up the feeder last night and I didn't see it till this morning. He got these pellet things! I have never gotten them. I thought he put the sheep feed in there by mistake, but apparently not. Are these pellets okay?
I am a beginner rug-hooker. I love collecting wool and old sweaters and felting them. Does anyone else share my addiction? I make weekly trips to the Goodwill on wool hunts. Is this strange?
I'm trying to make a list of must-see Christmas movies. Or any movie that makes you feel warm and cozy!! I love A Christmas Story, Charlie Brown Christmas, Christmas Vacation, etc. How about you?
