    Heated Roosts

I have heated roosts. I have the luxury of an outdoor wood boiler. I ran a return line from the house and put 1" pex inside a 1 1/2" metal conduit to radiate heat. The pipe is attached to the bottom side of a 2x4 laid flat. The chickens love it. It is 12' long and when it was 4F a few nights ago...

    Need some wisdom

I have 5 hens and a roo that are all 1 1/2 year old come January. They stopped laying to one egg a day to every other day. I'm fine with that. They live in a large 12x16 cement floored coop with heated roosts and an attached 18 x 30 run. I just rescued 12 more hens that range in age from 3-9...

Pullets won't go back in coop at night

Try putting a light on inside the coop on a timer. I just saved 12 hens from a friend who had a tragic fire. His hen's won't go into the coop at night unless the light is on at dusk. Otherwise they bed down in the run. Now the spoiled birds won't leave the coop to go into the run due to 4" of snow.

introducing 3-4 hens to a flock of 6 with a roo

Ok I have a 14x18 coop and 30x45 run for my 6 birds. My flock was much larger 30 hens but a bear thinned the flock and destroyed my fence in May. Fence now is electrified around the outside and only one attempt since and that bear is in my neighbors freezer..Since then I'm now married, have a...

Can chickens stand the cold weather?

Lets just say my birds are spoiled. I have a 11x16 coop with an 8' wall shed design. My outdoor wood boiler line is on the other side of the wall of my coop that is attached to my garage. I ran the return line under one of the 2 roosts for them. It does not heat the whole run just one of their...

My chickens are getting too brave.

About 10 minutes ago my 16 free range chickens decided that the flock of 40 something wild turkeys would be nice to meet. They have never left the yard and would not cross the road. They saw the turkeys and ran off to be with the turkeys across the road. The turkeys didn't mind and they began...

How do you heat your coops

I'd try gutter thermal tape. Not pipe tape. There is a difference. I was out of town for 2 weeks and I left the water on to my pig stall watering can. It was subzero for highs during most of that time and my neighbor who was feeding them said the water was still flowing out of their drinker no...

Sad to say he passed away this afternoon. I did get the Corid this morning but it was too late. I appreciate everyone's help. Should I still treat the rest of my flock with Corid? I do not see any sick chickens. I will be treating them in a week with the Safeguard wormer. I have a 4 day...

Rooster won't move, comb is dull and chapped, watery poo with white and black flecks, little snot on

Ok now I'm at a loss. I went to three different feed mills, TSC in two cities and not a one carried Corrid. I stopped on the way for different places for work. Most never heard of it except in the chick starter. One feed mill sold me "Tetroxy HCA 280", they told me this was what they purchased...

Does Coccidia mean he should have a bloody stool? So do not use Wazine? Seriously frustrated with this. I live like 45 minutes one way from the nearest TSC or feed mill. I have not opened the Wazine 17 yet. I guess I need to go back again.

Took the vetrx, and the other nutritive stuff back. I could not find those wormers but was able to get Wazine 17. That's the wormer that they sold at TSC. They told me this was the only wormer they sold for poultry. Had no time to go to the feed mill. Dawg 53, Do I still give him 3 to 4 CC...

Rooster won't move, comb is dull and chapped, watery poo with white and black flecks, little snot on

Ok thank you. I also noticed really oily feathers on him, and now some on my other birds. He is separated into my covered hallway. I do not see any white moving bugs like mice but my eye's are not that good and moving him causes him to scream out. His poo is really watery. I will...

How do you heat your coops

I have 18 chickens with one sick rooster in my chicken hospital getting spoiled. The other 17 are in a well ventilated, uninsulated 12x18 coop. I have an outdoor wood boiler that sends 180F water into the hot water heater, furnace, in-floor heating, and garage all through 1" piping which...

Whats the weirdest thing your chickens have eaten or tried to eat??

My Daughter left my garage door open after getting her bike out. I had a large bin of grass seed to put down last weekend. It was over a 50# bin of seed. Needless to say fourteen hens and two roosters made quick work of almost 20lbs of it in one day.

    Heated roost using hydronic heat?

Ok I will hold off on running the line. I have the materials to do it. I will just watch them. Although today was 45 degrees with 30-40 mph winds. They did not come out of the coop but for 1 hour after the rain, and three hens looked like they were shivering.Their feet were wet and cold but...
