Almost 8 Weeks - Old Enough to Live Outside?

I have four hens who have been living in the garage. They are almost 8 weeks and fully feathered. I live in COlorado, the nighttime temps can go down to 20 or 30. Is this old enough to fully live outside? I plan on moving them in with my existing flock once they can share their feed (18 weeks...

    Swollen Vent - Pictures

I don't think it's prolapsed, based on the pictures I saw. She hasn't laid an egg in two days, but it just appears inflamed and scabby, not inside out like a prolapse.

    Swollen Vent - Pictures

Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening? I can't figure out if it's internal or external and it's still a problem for my hen...

    Swollen Vent - Pictures

My Barred Rock has a swollen vent. This started about 10 days ago, with a slightly swollen area, but nothing too bad. I detected fleas on my flock, so have been treating them with DE. A few days, ago, the BR developed what looks like hard pustules around her vent. There were flea eggs there...

    Fleas or something...

I have three hens. One of them has developed pustules that are hard and look swollen around her vent. She also has what look like eggs layed by a flea or mite, and small flea type insects around her vent and in plumage. The other two have the small bugs too, and one looks like she's also...

    Birthday!

Looking forward to making the flock block! They will be happy little hens. Lots of snow outside today, so I'm sure they're getting bored.

    Birthday!

My chicks are turning 1 on Sunday, and I want to make them something special - food that is. Does anyone have ideas for extra special treats for chickens? I'm up for anything - I just want to celebrate their birthday with them!

    Silkie limping

Hi - i wrote something about my hen limping today too (here are the details - https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=128683). This same hen used to have a curled toe. I don't know where it came from, but it lasted for about a month, then just went away. Of course, she has...

What do you mean by vitamin water. The first thing that comes to mind to me is the colored drink - is this what you mean? If not, where could I get it? Sorry for the lame question

    bleeding sores on feet

One of my hens gets picked at, and that's usually what it looks like. I'm not positive, but it could be! I just treat her with iodine, neosporin and bandage it up. If you cover it with a neutral-colored bandage, the chickens won't peck at it. If the hen is bleeding, the others will be attracted...

    Limping NHR, bloody nail bed

MY NHR, Pearl, is getting pecked at by my other three hens. This has been going on for a while, so I've been caring for her wounds with iodine, neosporin, wrap. It comes and goes, but recently, she got pecked right around the nail bed on the middle "toe" on her right talon and has been limping...

What Other Chicken Should I Get!?!?!

I love my Speckled Sussex. Although I think she's a late egg-layer. She's super sweet, and very gentle. I also love my New Hampshire Red. She's like the mother hen, very calm and gentle. She's also a very good layer. I feel like those two are kindred souls! The Black Star and Araucana are a bit...

    First egg after 9 months???

I think my speckled sussex just started laying! We used to get 3 eggs/day (have 4 hens), then yesterday, we got a very small one, and today, we got 4 eggs for the first time. Is this possible. She's about 9 months old. Does anyone else have a speckled sussex that started laying later than usual?

    9 months later first egg!

I have 4 hens, and usually get about 3 eggs a day. Today, we got one very small egg for the first time. They were born just about 9 months ago - do you think that one of my hens just now started laying?

    cannable attacks!

Hi there, This has also happened to me this winter. Last night, the chicken house was splattered in blood, and my NHR's foot was pecked down to the bone. We put iodine, Neosporin and band aids on there (topped by some masking tape to keep the bandage in place). Does anyone have a suggestion for...

    Bloody Poop and Blood Drops

One of the hens (the Speckled Sussex) has been perching a lot - she usually hangs out with the other 3 during the day, instead of perching. In the event of bloody poop, should any precautions be taken when eating eggs? Thanks again for your help. -Morgan

Thanks. They're about 8-9 months old. Is that too old for cocci?

    Bloody Poop and Blood Drops

I have 4 hens, they live in a house that's 1/2 chicken wire under their perches, and 1/2 wood with pine shavings. Fed regular layer feed, they have plenty of water and have been laying regularly, given the season (about an egg every few days, each). I just noticed 3-4 droppings that are redish...

    Noise before laying?

My chickens are about 18 weeks and 3 days. Just about to start laying! We have a Speckled Sussex, New Hampshire Red, Araucana, and Black Star. They have been making much more noise lately than usual. Is this because they are about to lay? Is there any other explanation why they might be...
