    Giving up all my birds

I've had birds for 3 or 4 years, and have really enjoyed them. Currently I have a pair of chinese geese, 10 ducks and 16 chickens. As much as I love getting fresh organic eggs, and watching them be ridiculous in the yard, I've come to a bit of a conclusion. my life would be simpler, and...

    Super Broody Ducks this year!!!

Of our 7 female ducks, 4 have gone broody this year already... Ugh! We had 2 ducks hatch out a combined 7 ducklings, and then they smashed 5 of them. We rescued the other 2, and now 2 more ducks are on 2 more nests, and the one I can see (my blue swede) has 13 eggs in it! Oh dear!!!! Anyone...

    My husband fell for it!

I told him today (after 4 years of having chickens, including anconas and spitzhaubens) that all commercial chicken eggs start out brown and get bleached, some more than others.... and that's how white eggs exist. He said "Wow, that must be a really strong bleach solution!"... and I just...

Oh God, I feel so bad!!!!

2 ducks were broody, and had sat for 5 weeks. on saturday, both ducks emerged from under our low shed (we couldn't ever see the nest) with 5 babies! We were thrilled. Anyway, I moved the whole family into the spare coop, to keep them safe. today (Tuesday) I went out to the shed, and on the...

    Voluntarily Silent

I have voluntarily stopped speaking. I feel like my kids take my nagging etc. for granted, and don't listen like they should. DS especially, he's 8. He is making me totally nuts, and I am SO sick of asking him to "be nice, Sit down, Share with your sister, Don't talk back, Don't do that, Use...

Surprise Ducklings!!! what do you think? PIX!!!!!

So.... the random bunch of eggs that everyone was laying under my shed 2 months ago... was sat on for 5 weeks by a pair of my duck ladies, and surprise! This morning there were 5 little ducks. We've got a mallard male, and 2 KCs, 1 blue Swede, 1 splash swede, 1 Pekin, 1 Cayuga, &1 Indian...

How long should I wait until I break the nest?

I've got 2 ducks who are sitting on 2 nests. They started setting 4 weeks ago this past monday... so we're at about 31 days. I can't reach the nests, or see the nests, but I did poke around with a rake handle and there are certainly eggs in it. They may or may not even be fertile, our sole...

    Songbird Rehabber Question!!!

A friend of mine (really) found a bird on the road 4 days ago, blind, and it's eyes were swollen and crusty. She took the bird home. It's a small brown one, sparrow or finch. I told her to call a rehabber, but she was convinced she could manage it on her own. Anyway, she 'borrowed' my...

    Finch with severe 'Finch Eye'

Theoretically: My friend found a brown finch in the middle of a dirt road, totally blind with it's eyes swollen and crusted shut. She pulled her car over, got out and picked the bird up. It had no idea she was even there until she touched it. She brought it home, and called me, since I have...

Chick has a big gooey hole. Please advise!!!

We just hatched out a baby Mottled Java, and upon a bit of careful handling, noticed that the side of it's abdomen has no feathers, and looks a bit swollen, damp and veiny. then we noticed that the part where the leg should connect to the belly (leg pit?) it just doesn't. it looks like you...

    Cricket in the house. Help!

We have a very loud cricket in the house. I've been trying to convince DH that it has nothing to do with the Bearded Dragon in DS's room upstairs... which eats crickets... which is why we have 50 crickets in a big bin upstairs, and sometimes we lose a few... how can I make this stupid bug shut up?

    Best Bantam for COLD weather?

All of our bantams died this winter. The weather was strange, and would slowly rise, then sharply fall. all of our chicken deaths were bantams, and coincided with a severe cold snap (like -18)... my kids want tiny chickens again, but I'm hesitant.. are there any tiny bantams that can...

    ugh. birthday and inlaws...

My birthday is tomorrow, the big 30, and i had a wonderful evening planned, chinese food (so I don't have to cook), and a cake I make for every birthday... anyway, DH just told me he invited his stupid, awful brother to my 'Party'. it isn't a party. it's supposed to be me, DH and the kids...

    Potluck advice

I need some Potluck Advice. We've been invited by some friends of ours, to a Church Potluck. I have never ever been to a church potluck, and need some good advice on what to bring. The people there are OLD. Like older than my mom, and I'm 30. like grandmas and grandpas. so I assume some...

Can I punish DH for something he did 12 years ago?

I went to a party today, and ended up chatting with a lady there. She apparently went to school at the same college I did, at the same time, and remembers me being in a class with her (probably true, but I don't remember it). Anyway, i got home and mentioned her to DH, and he started to blush...

    Need advice, Downsizing.

Agreed to sell 1/3 of my flock, which = 7 chickens. I promised the lady a golden comet... I've got 3. One is a year older than the others, we didn't discuss ages, so i'm not obligated either way.... pros on selling the older one she's older She will be less productive from this point than...

    Prayers desperately needed.

My husband's grandmother is dying. She's been fighting (valiantly and unflinchingly) a brain tumor for a year now, and while it was getting smaller, in the past few weeks, it has returned with a vengeance. It has doubled in size, and is causing her a lot of confusion. well, she fell yesterday...
