The main appeal to me of them IS their combs, so I wouldn't want to keep them if I were going to have to cut them off.

I also live in a very cold climate and have one hen -- quite lovely -- but have heard it is the roos (due to their combs) that are most vulnerable. Do you have roosters, by any chance? If so, how have their combs held up? I'd really like to have a small breeding group.

Anyone know what breed this pullet is?

I did get a couple that were very plainly EE -- big fluffy cheeks. She doesn't have those, so it hadn't even occurred to me that she might be. Having no clue what breeds they're blending, that makes perfect sense. I wish I'd saved myself the trouble and posted here sooner. Thank you!

Can you help me identify these?

Are you positive they're all roos? A few look like pullets to me. Look at pics of Campines and Fayoumis, maybe?

Anyone know what breed this pullet is?

I ordered a hatchery choice rare breed assortment from MPC a couple of months ago (hatch date was 8/21/12). I've been able to identify almost all of the breeds, but this one is particularly giving me trouble. Having scoured picture after picture, I'm having a terrible time finding a match. I'm...

How do you store your poultry feed?

Those plastic pails look much like the ones our cat litter comes in. We reuse them for a lot of things, but I've been uneasy about using them for feed. I'm mainly concerned that I might be unable to get all the kitty litter chemicals out and it might be toxic to my birds. Rodents aren't a...

Setting eggs August 2 -- anyone else?

From what I've read, the sex link coloring only works with a silver-carrying roo over a gold-carrying hen. If I'm understanding it corrrectly, yours would be roos for sure... mine could go either way. I hope I get a chance to see how yours turn out. I think I'm seeing a little bit of lacing on...

Setting eggs August 2 -- anyone else?

I'd try taking the eggs out again for a minute (you really don't have to worry about keeping them warm for the few minutes it takes) and remove the paper towel. As far as I know, it's fine to leave the fan on. The lower temp reading might have something to do with all the evaporation going on in...

Setting eggs August 2 -- anyone else?

Apologies to be driving through right now (long day...), but I wanted to make sure I got a few pics up. Someone had asked about my brooder. As you can see, it's nothing exciting. 50 gallon Sterilite containter (available at Wal-Mart for abt. $20). Two large holes made with a jigsaw -- I like...

Setting eggs August 2 -- anyone else?

I don't know why you feel every chick you hatch is a girl or if you're looking at them right. What are you looking at when you feel this way? I just spent a long day at the county fair with my family. Came home with two bunnies. For now, I have a pic I took a couple of days ago of a...

Awesome to read about all of your hatches. I got my seventeen shipped chicks on Wednesday. Four of my BCMs hatched that afternoon -- I ended up with five of those, three dead in their shells. Humidity fluctuates so wildly here that I had an awful time with it and am pretty sure that's where I...

Setting eggs August 2 -- anyone else?

One of my Black Copper Marans started pipping last night and another just started a while ago. Patience isn't my thing. I peeked at them several times through the night. Hurry up! Poor little buggers. They have thick shells. I'm thinking the chicks I ordered should be here today, too. When I...

Omigosh! So cute! I'm curious how the crosses will turn out. I just locked down, too. I candled a few days ago, so I didn't do it again. Got a notification that the chicks I ordered have shipped, also. I'm getting antsy -- can't wait for some more little fluffballs!

My hatch is due a week from this coming friday

I'm so sorry you had to go through that -- very sad.

Thanks for sharing! Are they still hatching? I'm going into lockdown tomorrow too.

I got nine bad Serama eggs from an ebay seller in Florida. A few were so filthy I can't imagine how she must've been keeping her nests. I hope you have better luck if you decide to try. I want the Basques, too. I already have some Ameraucana eggs coming when this hatch is over. I keep...

Especially jealous of the ducks and Polish. Have you had black sex links before? My red sex links are awesome -- huge eggs every day and very friendly. I ordered 17 girls from MPC to arrive during my hatch. I didn't even want to confess to that here (not that y'all aren't the best...

Awww. :( How was your humidity? Eggs all oriented big-end up or on their sides? Did any of your culls look like they had bacteria? Sorry if those are bad questions. I have eggs in the bator now too, and had a few that inexplicably did this last time. I wanna understand why it happens, too.
