    Attempting my first ever garden!

I'm wondering if now would be the time to start planting? There's still a bit of a bite in the air, but the sun is definitely sticking around more. Also, I was wondering what I should plant (I live in northern alabama, at a higher elevation than normal, so yeah.) I know tomatoes, carrots...

    Making Plans

Thanks so much for your helpful reply!! As far as the building a three sided thing, that wouldn't work for me, because I have to have somewhere to keep them at night that is predator proof. We have a pack of coyotes in the woods behind my house, and my closest neighbor feeds foxes out his back...

    Making Plans

So, I'm probably about to make myself sound so completely dense that I'll be shunned (lol) but I'm trying to draw up plans for my coop, and I'm completely sucking at it. 1) I don't know what I'm supposed to put in it.. I've seen the Indoor Coop Pics thread and such, and I mean I obviously know...

    ALABAMA!!

True true. I'd get ducks, but I don't really see the point of keeping them? I want some down the road, but more because they're beautiful, and to bake with their eggs. Other than that, though, don't really see a point, so I'd rather start with chickens :)

    Beginning flock?

Haha, no worries there. Definitely going to expand my flock. It's actually why I dropped the original number down to 10, so I could bring home more when I figure out what I like and have a bit of experience :)

    ALABAMA!!

I think I know the place you're talking about.. Is it the one near MMCN? (hospital) I've seen the feed store there, but I've never gone in before.

    Beginning flock?

So, I'm thinking..... 4 Black Sumatras (I know, they aren't brown egg layers, but they're so beautiful!) 3 Light Brahma 2 Rhode Island Red (or Plymouth Rock.. Don't know which is better. Alternately, I might just get 5 Sumatras and 4 Brahmas) 1 Silkie (for their friendlieness and cuteness!)...

    ALABAMA!!

Well, hello everyone!! I've been referred to this thread by a few people, so I thought I'd drop in and say hi. :) I live in Morgan county, a bit south of Huntsville, I'm hoping to get my first flock in the spring, and that's all I can think to say. So, hello!

    Is my dog a problem?

I have an 8 month old lab/husky mix (refer to my avatar), who spends a lot of time outdoors (with me, while I do my chores). Now, I know that husky's are known for having a high prey drive, and labs are hunting dogs. Plus he'll be a year old, basically fully grown, before we bring the chickens...

    Beginning flock?

I'll be getting my first chicks in the spring, after the coops built and the weathers warmed. So I'm hoping to get some help with the breeds! I'm shooting for 15ish chicks to start. For the most part, I want egg layers (brown eggs), though a few meat birds would be good. I've been looking at...

Hey!! So, funny story: My mom and I went grocery shopping today, and I was talking about how it took forever to find a carton of eggs that weren't cracked, and at the register, it was a ridicolous amount of money for not much food. So when we were coming home, I was talking about the garden...
