Just had an idea from a website. I'd like a to make a coop door for my tractor that would dump chickens out into a long tunnel/run say about 25ft long that I could move from row to row in my garden and no more back breaking weeding....:) My question is, with only 3-4 chickens in there to cut...
Noticed last night that my four young birds are full grown now and they don't all fit on the roost! No room in coop for additional roosts so I'm going to sell one. Is it any problem to remove one from the coop and sell? Will this disrupt egg production? I'd rather have them all on the roost and...
Thanks for the reply. I did manage rotate my compost today so it must be cooking some despite our temps below freezing at night in 40's during the day. I am a little concerned about not giving the litter time to decompose by the time growing season approaches. I figure on strictly adding to...
Well I've got the makings for a great growing season next year. I now have a chicken tractor to rotate on two raised beds and on a 15x30 ft garden flat as well. Trying to develop a system for my for girls to work. Need feedback. My thoughts are to move the girls to raised bed now and leave...
I have 4 buff orpingtons that I was told when I purchased them that they were already laying. I've had them almost a month and no eggs. they are young (6mo) and I've been giving them layer feed for a month now. I'm little concerned that I shouldn't be giving them layer feed this long and not...
Thanks Flockwatcher, yeah they are still sort of pinkish color right now.The owner I bought them from said they had started to lay so I've been feeding them layer crumbles just in case. I have not started them on any oyster shell (just grit for now) until I start seeing some eggs.
I love chickens!
My six month old orpingtons have been in their new home for about a week and a half. Looks like about the last 4 days they have been in one of the nest boxes sitting but no eggs yet. Is this a good sign that eggs are on the way if they are at least sitting in the nest boxes? The last three to...
Hello all! Very Good info here and thanks for all the tips. It's made my path to being a new chicken owner very smooth thus far! I have 4 buff ladies that are doing quite well a week today!
Hello BYC'rs, Just started working on my shed/coop conversion.
My neighbor is selling me an 8x8 shed, 3 pcs of 3/4" plywood, lots of building materials and I was thinking of turning the garden shed into a coop/garden shed combo. Here is a start on my design. Would love some comments. As you can...
first time chicken owner here! The lady I bought them from seemed very knowledgeable about chickens. She said they were right at 6 mo. old and have started laying. We've had them going on our second day and I've been feeding them dumor layer crumbles. Thinking about going to local feed store...
Thanks, captdad. It's a mail order coop but I made some mod's to it to improve it. I bought four 6mo old buffs last night. Beautiful birds that looked very healthy! They were all huddled in one corner of the coop last night so it looks as though they have plenty of room. Yeah. I'm gonna move it...
Ok. I've been lurking for months and finally decided to join on this first day of owning chickens!
Me and 2 of 3 kids went out and opened the coop for the first time. this morning and one of the chickens came down for a bit.
As you can see, this is the cheapo ebay brand pawhut coop. I've made...
