Our friends were moving and could not take this girl with them...she lays a beautiful jumbo white egg...we have no idea what her ancestry might be? Just curious...thanks in advance...
Does anyone know if this can be fed to chickens?
It's growing all over the place...read it can be a malaria cure...but not finding anything on feeding it to poultry.
TIA! :)
Our 3 Barred Rocks are now 2 yrs old....they went rather dormant during winter here (Houston, TX), laying one or two and sometimes no eggs for days.
Now they are laying again, one normal large/jumbo egg a day..sometimes none, but at least 4-5 times in the last month, we have found a tiny "quail"...
Man, I'm already attached to Mabel, Maude and Ethel!
Too funny..we have 2 yr old Barred Rocks.....we started out with 4 chicks.
The 3 remaining are Molly, Maggie and Martha..........Martha being the bully.
Mimi was a victim.
We get anywhere from NO eggs a day to 2......go figger..
We're happy...
We have 3 of our original 4 hens, now almost 2 yrs old.
Barred rocks.
They have been laying sporadically during these coolish dark months, one, two or NO eggs a day.
(We're in the Houston Texas area).
These past two days we are finding one egg smashed in the nest box.....then
today two...
We started with 4 chicks a year and half ago.....laying well when reaching chicken "puberty" (no roosters here).
September was moulting month and we had a significantly lower production( 1 to none most days), as well as one *homicidal hen* who killed one of her litter mates.......uffda!
We...
Interesting post...we have a "homicidal hen"...........the bully has already killed one of her sisters.
We have had 4 hens since April 2009.
They are now about a year and half old. All of a sudden, one becomes a bully...one dead.
The other three are now: Bully, Maggie...
Too funny..I just told my DH that we have to buy lipstick for our 4 hens, since I never wear the stuff.
He asked why, of course.
To paint smiley's on their vents, I replied. He roared!
And, yes, I agree with Beekissed's scientific approach, but the lipstick idea sounds so fun!
We have one...
Hi and ... this is an awesome place!
We live just north of the Houston area and have had 4 Barred Rock Hens for almost 2 years now. They are good layers, (large beautiful brown eggs), and tolerate the heat just fine!
Amazing girls here, in Houston area with 90+ degrees and often 90+ humidity.
We are SO backyard chickens in this tight subdivision.....(Neighbors not complaining yet).
Our 4 (FOUR) hens, Barred Rocks, are producing 2 to 4 eggs a day, more or less, but a very good average.
They are just over...
Thank y'all for prayers and well wishes...she will be coming home to Houston by the week end.
Funeral service Friday or Saturday.........I miss her already so much.
To all who posted on this topic last year, I want you all to know it was and IS so appreciated.
Your thoughts and cards really brightened her day.
It is with such sadness I'm posting that she did not win her last battle with cancer. The last few months were extremely difficult, as she was in...
Our hens have been laying about 9 months now with no problems what-so-ever.
Last week we found an egg, very thin shelled, under the roost. Never happened before.
Picked it up and it broke-it was so thin.
Hasn't happened again and usually our eggs are almost too thick shelled. It was an...
LOL ...we have 4 hens and NO rooster...they are fine after a year; we got them as 3 day old chicks.
Usually we get anywhere from 2 - 4 eggs a day from them , all well shelled and vibrant yolks...YUM!
They get Wendland's egg layer feed, as well as greens from the yard and leftover parrot food...
4 from 4 yesterday and today!!!!!
However, day before was only 1...go figger!
Mostly we get 2 or 3 a day....we're good with that!
And we have happy healthy girls, (so far).
They're a year old come April.
Prayers for healing for your brother.........we know the feelings.
Our sister has just gone thru surgery, chemo and radiation..........so far the cancer is gone.
Our prayers for your brother is that he may become healed, in Jesus name we pray this.
Not sure if this was THE first or ONE of the first.......really can't remember?
Fried sunny side up for English muffin dunking..it was fantastic!
I didn't notice any strong smell either...just wonderful eggs!
We have 4 Barred Rocks, and we have handled them from they were 3 day old chicks, when we got them almost a year ago.
They are very friendly and people oriented, and yes, they will be lap chickens (if they *have* to;) )
Very docile in their behavior, tho at times, if we're not quick enough to...
