    Shellys Page

My name is Shelly and I live in Southwest Missouri. This is my first year raising poultry and I am addicted. I currently have 18 mixed chickens (4 roos and 14 layers) including Rhode Island Reds, Dominiques and Barred Rocks. I also have a turkey (bourbon red), 6 guineas and 3 ducks. I have asked...

Did the turkey kill my hen?

I have a one year old Tom. He lives in the barn. I let my chickens free range in the day and lock them in a stall at night. Yesterday I went to the barn to check waterers and Tom was standing over a hen that was flopping all over the floor. I shoo'd him back, picked her up, looked for something...

    Chickens and Ducks

I have RIR and other mixed breeds of chickens and I also have three Pekins and 8 Muscovey Ducks. They all live togather. They free range in the day and share a stall in the barn at night. No problem. Egg laying usually begins around twenty weeks. Different breeds take less/more sometimes. If...

    I don't like my eggs :( ???

I'm afraid your just really not used to fresh eggs. Store eggs have no flavor at all. You can keep forcing yourself and maybe get used to the good ol' farm eggs. However, I would wager that won't work. It's in your mind that you don't like them so you problably never will. Use them for baking...

    cockerel w/ crooked neck

My little guy is all better!! I think he was injured instead of sick. After being in the chicken hospital for awhile with no changes, I put him back in the coop with his friends. Since he didn't die I figured he needed to go back because he seemed lonely. Now, he is fine. Holds his head up...

    BUMMER

First of all, throw out the eggs. Better to be safe than sorry. Second, disturb the area to make it a less desirable place to lay. Pile some sticks there. Is there any way you can keep the girls inside the coop until later in the morning? Sometimes that helps remind them where they are...

    When to stop feeding!

You should stop feeding them 12 hours before processing. They should continue to have access to fresh clean water. If you do not discontinue feeding the job will be somewhat messier but there are really no other serious consequenses.

    See my tiny egg?

It's just one of those things. She is a very young hen and she hasn't been laying a whole month yet. My guess her body is still getting regulated.

    See my tiny egg?

This very tiny egg came from a young white silkie. In the pictures it is next to a regular sized brown egg, the same silkies regular sized egg and a quarter for reference. After I got some good pictures and had to crack it open and see what was inside. It had mostly white with a little bubble...

    1 week! **Pic Heavy**

How do ya dye the chick? Is it safe for the baby? I understand it only dyes the fluff and feathers come in the actual color, but I don't understand how you get them colored.

    Red Bottoms?

Is it normal for the skin area around the vent to be red on a rooster that is "with" hens? It isn't just red in a circle around the vent, it is the whole bottom from tail to legs. I have two roosters each with their own flock and noticed (while they were pecking scratch on the ground) that both...

    cockerel w/ crooked neck

OK, it has been over a week and there is no change. My little roo can lift his head but spends a lot of time with it down under his tummy. He kind of walks backwards when his head is down until he bumps into something. Sometimes that causes him to roll over frontwards. He eats and drinks. I've...
