Specific breed, or is he a mutt?

Quote: That's it! I did a google search (funny, I wouldn't have ever clicked on "Red Sex Link" as an option since he wasn't red, but d'oh, it's so obvious now!) It makes perfect sense--he was thrown out at a day old because he was clearly a rooster, and also why he seems so unusual, I mean...

Specific breed, or is he a mutt?

What is "red leakage?" And maybe I will post pictures of the others a bit later, I have one other that is probably a mix that is the primary rooster suspect (iridescent tail feathers are coming in), I would still like to know what breed/breeds it is, and also a light brahma that is a bit...

Specific breed, or is he a mutt?

Hi all, I finally got some chickens (YAY!) and have been slowly filtering out the roosters (sniff, sniff), finding them new homes as they start to crow. Out of five birds, so far I've confirmed 2 roosters and suspect 2 more. I'm not sure I'm going to have any chickens left when all is said and...

Bleeding toe . . . what to do?

Thanks for the help you guys. After I wrote this I ran out and found some of that powder in the pet store, designed for applying to wounds from nail and wing clipping (I avoid the kind with benzocaine because I'd heard that can be bad for birds--even thougg the package said it's for birds!) by...

Bleeding toe . . . what to do?

Hi guys, a hen has a bleeding toe, it looks like her toenail got pulled out when she startled. I put liquid bandage on it and that seems to seal it up for a while, but then it starts bleeding again. Is there a better product to use to stop the bleeding long enough for healing to take place or...

    Hen with puffy crop

One of my coturnix hens has a very puffy breast area, I am assuming this is a problem with her crop and have been trying to research how to help her, but I'm not sure of exactly what is going on. She doesn't seem to be losing weight, she is laying, and all seemed well with her and I didn't...

Larger quail eggs, should I incubate them?

Thanks guys! Makes complete sense! Another question: Now that I'm thinking about this, I'm realizing that the rooster she is mating with is smaller than the other rooster (and is also a golden bird, rather than a brown), so would it work out that her larger eggs might end up with average size...

Larger quail eggs, should I incubate them?

Thanks, SRS! I think I agree! Laura

Larger quail eggs, should I incubate them?

When I read about selecting eggs for incubation there is usually a warning not to incubate larger than average eggs. Can anyone tell me why? I have one hen who consistently lays larger than average eggs. Her eggs are just bigger than the other hens' eggs. She is a jumbo, like the others, and...

WTB golden quail or other colors, hens only (will drive, near MO)

I'd been thinking that the jumbos (yes, brown) would be the only result! I may have to give it that a try if I can't find any hens, the golden roo is living with a jumbo hen right now so we have fertile eggs. Thank you for the info!

WTB golden quail or other colors, hens only (will drive, near MO)

I'm actually willing to drive a bit to get 'em, so even if you aren't in MO give me a shout, we don't mind traveling a bit (and as homeschoolers are always up for long field trips). I want some hens to breed with our lone golden roo to begin with. We have lots of jumbos and don't need more of...

What do your quail nesting boxes look like?

I'm kind of surprised that any quail hens would use a box, I thought they wouldn't so I didn't bother (but we've kept small closed up boxes in there for them to play with, they like jumping up on them), but after reading this I decided to try a tissue box out with my indoor quail pair. I don't...

Sourcing non-jumbo hens or eggs to incubate

All my quail are jumbos but one, and while I have plenty of fertile eggs from them I really want some hens with interesting colors (to mate with our one golden rooster). I live in MO and so far haven't found local sources for any quail but jumbos. I am looking for resources for different colors...

    Mating too aggressive?

Okay, you got me, I'm tender-hearted . . . I have to admit that the facts of quail-life hit me pretty hard. The funniest thing was when we first observed the ruckus, my 9-year-old daughter said, about the poor hen who was the object of affection at the moment "I wish she would just lie down...

    Dusting "hut"?

Quote: ARE THEY NOT IN AN ENCLOSED RUN? Oh, sorry, I didn't see your question before: they were in runs, basically hardware cloth bent into a tunnel with their cage butted up to it, I still can't figure out how the hawk got to them. My husband thinks perhaps the hawk was heavy enough to get...

    Mating too aggressive?

Hi all, we've had 2 roosters for a year (my daughter's pets, one is a small golden, the other seems to be a jumbo), and got 8 jumbo hens to keep them happy. We still haven't moved them all in together, but tried having them meet a few of the hens by putting 2 hens in with each of the boys. I'm a...

    quail with injured beak

Thank you all for responding, I didn't actually get back here to read your comments until just now (and wow, is this board ever busy!) The quail with the beak injury seems to be healing on her own, though it is now a bit crooked. This poor quail seems cursed. Thanks to all who gave advice!
