Shipped eggs are hit and miss. Sometimes I've had amazing results...others a total bust. Atlanta is roughest on eggs. If my eggs coming from the east coast go through that sorting facility my results are usually terrible. Supposed to be the largest sorting facility in the us... Sometimes you...
Ha! Down sizing. Lol Been there. I'm up to 8 pens I think now...and could really use a couple more to separate more breeds.
I do still have your GCMs Chickee. Two roosters and maybe 6-7 hens. Some are daughters of the original eggs I hatched from you. I can't remember how dark they originally...
Yes. Brinsea Octagon with a bad heating element. When I got up in the morning of day 21-22 it was HOT to the touch. Sent the incubator in immediately. :/
If I want to start a few eggs at the end of another set of eggs before lockdown, I just set the eggs to one side with the little separator bars that came with the incubator and maybe lay a paper towel over them. I always leave my vent open anyway when not in lockdown so the eggs loose the excess...
I had one incubator cook eggs in lockdown TWICE. They were awesome with handling shipping and eventually just switched out the heating element. Luckily they were my eggs and not shipped eggs.
I have over 100 chickens who free range together, including 10-ish silkies and I have had no issues in 4 years. My huge Marans roosters protect everyone and I haven't had any picked off by hawks like people sometimes say they do. :)
They should be fine. Just keep your vents open once you pull the chicks to help with the extra moisture in the egg. I've done staggered hatches with no effect. :)
I love my girls from you Sunny. I also have a few from Wynette and my rooster is from her. I'm not near as educated on them as you guys are, just love having them and having the Marans roosters has cut my hawks down quite a bit. Apparently the hawks don't want to chance it with these big boys...
Hi Chickee! 4 of my 5 olive eggers from you are broody already. Ha! Love them. And my Ameraucanas are all fantastic. Picking back up on laying eggs quickly this year. Yay for spring!
WVduckchick- when the tape is on and I leave a little crack at the bottom of the lid all the moisture collects there. It's crazy. I don't know about your humidity level where you live but we don't hit above 1% unless it's raining. Lol I also don't have to worry about adding any water to the...
RubyNala- Try taping the edges of your incubator lid. I have 3 Brinseas and I have paper towels under the tray covering the bottom during lockdown and I tape the lid edges with painters tape to help hold humidity. I live in the desert so everything dries crazy fast. I also do it so my kids don't...
I totally agree. I only let my daughter set our darkest ones or she'd hatch every egg from her favorite hens. Lol The rooster I have now doesn't seem like he likes the Marans girls, he seems like he follows my Ameraucana hens more. Which is fine for olive eggers, but come on!?! Lol Doesn't go...
