Topic of the Week - Gardening with Chickens

We have a completely enclosed chicken compound that is predator proof so the chickens can be outside any time safely. During the day let our chickens out into a larger area that isn't predator proof but keeps the birds contained. We just have way too many flower gardens to protect them from the...

Official BYC Poll: How Is Your Run Covered?

Unsupervised run has welded wire fencing with 2x4 inch openings covering it top to 12 inches below ground with hardware cloth going around the bottom half. We also have a larger 'free range' pen area that doesn't have anything covering it because we generally supervise them when they are in that...

What are the little bumps on eggs?

It's definately not lice eggs, I looked up the pics and man was that gross! The bumps seem to be connected and made of the shell material. Perhaps the calcium like you suggested.

What are the little bumps on eggs?

I've had someone tell me that if an egg has those little bumps on it's shell that means that it is fertile. I'm pretty sure this isn't the case but what are those bumps anyway?

    Green roof, good idea?

I was looking through the designs posted here and saw a coop with a "green roof" that had like a sedum garden on the top. Does this really keep the coop cooler and does it cause rot? Thanks.

This is a roo that I rescued from out back of my office building at work. He was young and VERY sweet when I got him but now that he's grown he no longer wants to be held:(. Does anyone know what he is? I am new to the forum so I hope I am adding the pic right.

I had one that looked like the little brownish red one with the stripe on its back. It turned out to be an ameraucana - the ones that lay blue eggs. In any case they are all cute!
