Depends. I prefer hen meat. Tender and mild. Roosters have a stronger smelling meat(some people like it, some don't…) and can be tough in the leg and thigh. The roosters do get bigger faster though.
thank you--there is barring on her neck feathers and some light "barring" on her other feathers but it is not distinct(I will look at it when I can to see if it is barring or some other marking as it looks more like the Barnevelder's marking). the male Rhodebars I got look like typical...
hi-
I have a 2 month old Rhodebar female from Greenfire Farms and her color seems different from photos I've googled.... She has a bit more blue grey in her body. Is this her juvenile markings or will she keep this color? thanks
I'm looking for Orange County chicken friendly cities. Thank you for the already posted info on cities! very helpful. I am adding some other cities and welcome comments from residents on their experiences. thanks in advance!
La Habra Heights(not OC but close): allows chickens and other poultry...
wow--your birds must be so beautiful-I can't wait til the birchen coloration kicks in. thank you again for the insight…and this makes me so excited…:-D pullets!
Both are 7 weeks old. I thought both were roos but now I have my questions about the Birchen Maran. What do you think?
The other chickens in the pics are Rhodebar and Bielelfelders. All from Greenfire.
thanks!!
Splash Barnevelder. I think this is a cockerel? huge feet, big bodied mild...
Started 1 day olds July 7th and have been enjoying them very much. So hardy and tasty! And now the last Cornish Cross hen started laying eggs. She is the first amongst a Leghorn, RIR, Ameraucana, Barred Rock, Australorp, Buff Orpington and Jersey Giant. I was thinking the Leghorn would be first...
thank you so very much for your replies! I will encourage her to try two and am happy to have them back if she can't handle both. They are free range and I don't know if they would do well being in a coop all day. I am going to go look at the layout of the yard and see what can be done so they...
Hi-
it is getting close to the time when my chickens will start laying eggs and my BF's mom wants one. I suggested 2 so they will have company, but she only wants one. Will the hen be ok being by herself or will she get really stressed out? Will she end up bonding more to people?
any thoughts...
those look like the Bielefelder chicks i got from Greenfire. The Rhodebars I got were more tan and slightly less striping. Do you find the BF's to be hyper? Mine are SO active compared to my first flock.
Congratulations!! Wow--I will keep my fingers crossed that Batman turns out to be an Ayam Cemani!
and thanks for posting your pics. it helped me identify my Greenfire Farms auction win.
I have a Birchen Maran!
thank you! She is still not well but seems to be doing better. Walking with the flock and eating normally today, though her poops did get a bit watery. She moves stiffly and does try to sit to where there isn't as much weight on her one leg.
thank you. I watched her yesterday and she rested much of the morning. She did follow the rest of the flock, albeit slowly and only shivers when she first has to stand up. She does have a very small limp but it is a bit hard to tell because she is so big and usually walks with a waddle. Her...
thank you so much! I found something that may be the issue. I noticed that she shivers when putting weight on her right leg. This made me think it could be internal injury. Earlier in the week a Possum attacked my chickens and killed one. I thought that was it, but just now, I checked out my...
this morning when I let my chickens out for the day I noticed one of the Cornish Cross females didn't run out and attack breakfast. When I went to check on her, she got up, ruffled her feathers and shivered, walked a few steps then laid down again. I took her outside and she again ruffled her...
