This is my first winter with chickens (my first year, actually) and I have two girls molting right now. They were hatched in early February, so they are about 10 months old. They are really getting naked and it's cold...do I worry about them dying from cold? Seems an odd time to lose...
Awesome news! Thank you so much!!! I so appreciate the help, being so new to this whole country life and all. Yes, we have a Tractor Supply AND I just won a $150 gift card for it last week! :) I will hang in there and wait and see how he's doing. Yesterday, he didn't limp at all and stood...
There doesn't appear to be any heat in the swelling... I left him out with the girls...after doctoring him up this evening and making sure he was able to walk around. He isn't even limping tonite and catching him was not exactly a walk in the park, even though I have them penned up in the duck...
Thank you! I had planned on keeping on with the keeping on at least a few more days... Today, I did let him into the coop with his girls for a visit, while I'm cleaning and disinfecting the dog kennel and washing all the towels we've gone thru with him. Going to put him back in this...
Next question for you guys....the bumbles appear totally healed (using the iodine)...no little spots or scabs at all, BUT the middle "toe" is still swollen all the way down and he still won't walk on it. I am not sure what to do. Still have him crated in the dog kennel, on a towel and he's so...
Just call me a big old meanie, but I think I would literally shoot the neighbor's dog. I'm sorry, but irresponsible pet owners really tick me off. This is not only irresponsible, it's rude, disrespectful and downright mean. If you have already talked to the neighbor and obviously, it hasn't...
Not sure who is laying...I have three females, a pekin, a mallard and a hybrid. I know my pekin has laid at least one, as she pulled out feathers. We have found eggs in three different places and put them all together. Tonite, there were 5 of them in the nest, and someone had covered them up...
I apologize in advance for potentially starting a new thread on an existing topic, but I've searched and probably not using the right key words. I am new to ducks (and chickens) and not sure how to handle our first eggs from the ducks. We have no roosters, so the chicken eggs are easy, collect...
When I asked this same question of friends that raise chickens (in real life, hadn't found this forum yet), they told me the only time they ever rinsed their eggs was when/if there was poop on them. My very first egg (I have 7 that lay) had poop on it and not a single one since, so the other...
I love that you call yourself the crazy chicken lady! I go back and forth between the crazy dog lady and the crazy chicken lady (well, that is what my kids call me, anyway). My chickens are my girls...love those feathery rascals!
Thank you so much for all your help! We are new to the country...got our chickens in February (started out as 14, but lost 7 all at one fell swoop of something getting them...now, they only get to free-range when I can babysit, which is most evenings) and our ducks at Easter (started out with...
I will get some iodine!! I'm willing to try anything to not have them lame or hurting AND that won't force a vet bill. :) :) I'm stuck until Saturday with just the vetericyn (and in fact, he will be alone all day tomorrow, have to move a kidlet into college), but will pick some up and start...
I know this has been a long time ago...but my feller has the almost exact same thing. I cannot justify a vet bill for my duck (I have three sons in college, trying to find a job and my husband would kill me, figuratively, of course), but not sure what all to do...so was curious how Ming ended...
One of my girls laid a HUGE egg this morning (I have no roosters, only want eggs for food, not for more chickens)...it won't even fit in the egg carton. Is this common? Thanks in advance.
Leftover chicken??!!!??? That is as funny to me as feeding them eggs. :) I just can't bring myself to do that. Yet. :) Just found out I could feed my chickens other-than-feed-foods...who knew? :) So today, they got figs, okra, oats, lettuce and bread. They have eaten bugs and...
Hehehehehehehehehehehe, somehow this just seems so wrong! :) (but I love it). I'm just learning with my chickens and other than strawberry tops and bugs, haven't really given them much "people" food. Finding out i can give them most of what I have been sticking in the compost! Thanks...
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yes, I'm new to chickens. We just moved to the country a year ago and getting chickens was first on my list of must-haves. I love my girls...it was horrible, awful when my group of 14 was narrowed down to 7 while they were...
