Nutrition info mealworms, earthworms, red wrigglers(compost worms) etc

I need to add a caveat: redworms do not actually digest microbes, they pass through their gut unaltered. You must therefore be very careful not to "contaminate" your vermicompost with quail litter. For our very occasional meat or fish leftovers, I have come up with the following modification...

Quail on Deep Litter - Why it Works

My ceilings are between 12 and 18"high. I use Italian waterers that sometimes slosh water, this is a bit of an issue as the litter becomes smelly when wet and sticks to their claws. Quail can fly and mine make it up a 3" step without any ladder using their wings. They will go anywhere for...

For all who are thinking of making their own quail feed

I hear what you are saying: there is much to be gained in having a "feed specialist" making up feed for you. I thought it was an interesting question if, say, an organic broadacre farmer (linseed, sunflower, camelina, grains) could produce the main ingredients for quail feed himself, because...

For all who are thinking of making their own quail feed

I have come across some useful info in "Nutrient Requirements of Poultry: Ninth Revised Edition, 1994" on GoogleBooks under the following link: http://books.google.ch/books?id=sy8rAAAAYAAJ, page 45. Please share any recipes you are using if you do not buy pre-mixed feed. Here the table...

    Health Benefits of Quail eggs

As to the allergy effects - my husband has severe hayfever and this year his symptoms started a whole month later than usual in spite of this year being very bad for pollen. I looked it up on the web and I remember the effect on asthma was discovered in the 1920s there were a couple of papers on...

    Who does self-sustaining quail?

You're wrong about cabbage - quail love eating cabbage greens, I feed them all my brokkoli leaves. They love alfalfa greens aparantly. Earthworms - yes they can learn to forage for them in a tray of compost. They love it actually. No need to separate it out. However worms can carry disease and...

Dehydrated Food Waste (DFWP) - feed for quail

I have been offered DFWP: dried food waste from a commercial kitchen, it looks like chicken feed. The food is dried in heat, not decomposed. I am wondering if I have stumbled on a source of free quail food? I can see three options: 1) feed direct 2) use to grow mealworms, then feed (the...

    door in coop

Maybe you could trick them into going back into the coop by feeding them at night only? and renmove their feed in the morning when you open up their coop. Quail are incredibly food motivated.

do quail go up and down ramps.

To get them to go up the ramp, put their food and water upstairs for a while. Might want to lock them in the "upstairs"for a bit so they can make it part of their territory.

    natural quail remedies

Hi, following on from a very interesting talk on how a rabbit breeder managed to eradicate a very serious disease by using natural remedies (mainly in the greens fed) I am left wondering: What natural remedy have any of you used (preventative or curative) on your quail? There are a few...

    quail tractors

I put a clay plant pot on its side in the pen and 1-2 eggs are usually in it. Might be an idea to make egg collecting easier, as they are territorial, attach some post to the tractor sides somehow? Add a little hay perhaps?

    Conturnix noises and behaviours dictionary

Thinking of the hours of puzzled observation when I first got my quail, I tought it would be really useful to compile a "quail language dictionary" perhaps with video or at least sound. Anybody join in?

is this feed ok to feed my quails?

If you want to add protein, you could give your quail cooked egg, or red wrigglers (compost worms). Quail love all sorts of insects, earwigs, ants, small slugs, pupae... With compost worms, make sure to feed them only kitchen scraps, don't get them from your composted quail/chicken bedding...
