Hatching baby ducks- do I need to separate from the rest of the ducks?

I was surprised to discover one of my Saxony ducks suddenly wanting to sit 4 weeks ago. I'd been hoping for someone to go broody, but it seemed a lost cause until this welcomed surprise. And not daring to move her, I've since allowed her to sit on her clutch of 15 eggs in the duck house which...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Ha! Thanks- glad it was helpful! :)

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Quote: Yep, I got the large heat plate :) Observing them is really important to me and was the one drawback. But using the heat lamp at first and transitioning to the heat plate was super easy and effective. :)

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Hey all! It's been a week since I got my baby chicks and have been able to put the Premier Heating Plate to use. I've written a review on my blog, for those interested :) Hopefully this can help some of you who are curious or on the fence. I did notice that they're backordered until the...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

I went ahead and ordered the heat plate, will be here Wednesday. I will let you know how long it works out for the number of chicks I have. I'm going to assume that it should sustain them for as long as the heat is needed, or else it should not be advertised as capable of warming up to 50...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

I actually went down there today and it's warmer than 50 I'd bet. It has a really low ceiling so I was worried about using a heat lamp as it is. I think I'm going to go with it, thanks so much for your help!

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

This has been a really helpful thread! I have 46 new chicks arriving on Feb. 21st and I'm thinking of placing a 3-day order on one of these heat plates. I'm up in NE Minnesota where we have been just beaten down with freezing cold temps- but luckily it looks like we'll be hitting 30 at the end...

Post Your Game Cam Pics Here!!!

A bad kitty indeed. One of our neighbors who lives about 1 1/2 miles away discovered the same cat killed all of his chickens and had him cornered in a lean-to. A DNR officer who lives next to him came over and shot it. So thankfully this one is no longer an issue...but the aftermath of dealing...

Post Your Game Cam Pics Here!!!

It's very tricky where I'm at (up in the arrowhead of NE Minnesota). More than likely, the DNR would come out and live trap and release somewhere (which obviously didn't work out too well in this case). All I know is something needs to be done. That attack cost me a lot of money and lots of...

Post Your Game Cam Pics Here!!!

A trapper friend of mine was the one who set the live traps. Unfortunately, the attack happened the week after trapping ended for cats in our area and it's now illegal to trap and kill. (TRUST me- I want this thing dead, lol). We have had incredible amounts of snow, not to mention -30 temps...

Post Your Game Cam Pics Here!!!

I had originally caught this bobcat on the game cam before I got this one up close and personal- less than 5 feet away. This photo was taken two days before he chewed a hole through the side of my chicken coop (through the run door) and killed 40 chickens. He was live trapped, transported away...

Do you refrigerate your eggs or not?

I too love to show off the beauty of farm fresh eggs :)! But if we're talking salmonella {and if your eggs are contaminated with salmonella}, salmonella flourishes at temps between 40 F and 140 F {room temperature range}, but cannot grow at temps below 40 F {your refrigerator}. So if...

Do you refrigerate your eggs or not?

Yep, my mom taught me this years ago. I always leave out eggs and butter at room temperature before baking :)

Do you refrigerate your eggs or not?

I wrote an article a little while back that gives all kinds of useful {and useless- but fun!} information about eggs, if interested: http://yellowbirchhobbyfarm.blogspot.com/2013/12/eggs-everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know.html As far as leaving your eggs out- you can certainly do this, but...

No longer laying in nest box

Being that it was shoved up against the sides definitely makes me think they bathed in there. My hens were doing the same thing- so just put a nice healthy amount of nesting material in there so if they do bathe, there's still some depth on the bottom of the box and not just the sides :) It...

    Request for Weird Egg Photos!

Thank-you so much :) These would be so helpful, but I would definitely like permission from the owners of the photos first so I could give proper credit. Perhaps I will find some I'd like to use and contact the owners directly? Thanks! Much appreciated :)

No longer laying in nest box

Since the nesting material was pushed out of the box probably means they decided to bathe in the nest boxes and then due to the fact that there wasn't much litter left, they felt better about laying on the floor. I've had problems with this in the past and what I did was nailed up a board...
