I just gave my chicks a handful of earthworms. OMG....too funny! They were scared for about 30 seconds until the runt went charging in. Then it became a frenzy.
I did like others and started by holding food in my outstretched hand. Takes a while for them to warm up, but once one braves it the rest would follow. At 5-6 weeks old, I can only take letting eat out of my hand for a few minutes(their beaks can hurt), but a couple of them like to play "flight"...
Got a great deal on a used 10'x10' dog kennel today on Craigslist today. We managed to get it up before it started hailing. The plan is to put a hardware cloth skirt all the way around. Would 2' up and 2' on the ground be sufficient? We will also be covering the top with poultry wire to keep out...
That's a lot of money for a little coop. Keep checking your local Craigslist for deals. I bought mine new from a local shed builder for only $500! We divided it in half temporally till the chicks get bigger, wired it and added linoleum tile to the floor for easy cleaning.

I had a problem with one of my six being half the size of the others, acting shy and lethargic. Started adding probiotics last Thursday and saw a little improvement. Gave her some hardboiled egg yesterday morning and WOW, what a difference! She's been like a totally different bird.
Hello all. After much urging from my better half , we've decided to start a small flock. No chicks yet but i did pick up a pre built coop yesterday and wrangled it to the back yard this morning. Looks like some quality time will be spent at the local Tractor Supply next.
