    Dead and dying 6-weekers!

Thank you all for your input. I have puzzled this out and I have come to the conclusion that the deaths were due to an inexperienced mommy, an inexperienced chicken owner and the night temp going into the upper 40s. My rationale for this is as follows: There were no signs of respiratory...

    Dead and dying 6-weekers!

Thank you, everyone, for your kind words. Sonoran Silkies, thank you for the suggestion. Not having read it until just now, it just happened that I inspected the body of one chick right after death and found no sign of mites; I did lift up a wing and look at the pit, and it was clear of any...

    Dead and dying 6-weekers!

All three are dead now. Not a mark on them, Keelbones seem prominent, but that could be from not having eaten since last night, couldn't it? I have looked all three over - 2 full, one half-full crop. All pullets. All loved. All wanted. All gone.

    Dead and dying 6-weekers!

But it doesn't seem to be respiratory...no rattles or noisy or labored breathing, no drainage. I just mentioned that some of my flock had respiratory illness because I'm grasping at straws to figure out what's wrong.

    Dead and dying 6-weekers!

I'm confused! Yesterday evening my chicks were healthy and rambunctious and this morning 3 of 4 were cold and catatonic. Since then one has died, one is unchanged, and one is starting to make little chirring noises. Because they were all cold to the touch, I immediately tucked them (fearfully...

9 week old Buff Orpington-it's legs are yellow & the others have pink

I had 5 buff orps and traded the roo and one hen. They all have identical coloring, but one hen has yellow-gold legs. No problem - I just call her "Goldilegs." The others all have whitish pink legs. I'm assuming it's a normal genetic variation... I'm interested in what posts you get on...

One says Production Reds, one says Rhode Island Reds; what do YOU say?

Sonoran Silkies wrote Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't a production red or a production RIR simply a hatchery quality RIR? The lighter coloured feathers (as compared with exhibition birds) indicating that it was not bred for plumage and conformation qualityh, but rather that the focus was on...

One says Production Reds, one says Rhode Island Reds; what do YOU say?

I don't know if I'm ready for this, but go ahead and tell me what you think. Rhode Island Reds or Production? If they're production, it'll be the second time I've gone down this road since March. I'd like to remedy the problem sooner rather than later! Thanks, you wonderful BYCers!

6 Rhode Island Reds (please check) ~6 weeks (?) sex?

Ohhhh! I didn't even see the wattles until you just now pointed them out! It's been 10 days since that photo - I'll have to go out and look more closely at all of them. Hopefully there are no more than three cockerels in there. The boy with the biggest comb is a love - always gravitates...

    guesses?

I'm really new at this, but I'm going to say rooster. It's tough to be sure, though, because the other birds in the photos look like EEs or Ameraucana mixes, so they will have a tiny pea comb in comparison to a hen of a different breed. For comparison, here's a photo of ~8-wk-old RIRs, both...

WHAT is going on with gold sex-links?!?! I have a ROO, too!

I am LOVING these Buff Orpingtons! These birds are fabulous! So quiet, so calm, so smart! And that palomino gold is a treat for the eyes. I already have them out with my big girls and there is next to none of the drama that went on when I let my production reds out at a slightly older age...

6 Rhode Island Reds (please check) ~6 weeks (?) sex?

I refuse to give up on getting RIR hens for my flock! I picked up these sweeties a few weeks (I think) ago. At first I thought I had one rooster, then I thought two, and now I'm thinking three. What do YOU think? I have one photo of five together and a separate photo of the sixth...

WHAT is going on with gold sex-links?!?! I have a ROO, too!

thewarriorchild wrote If it makes you feel any better... for 8 wk olds you most likely did not have to pay for light/electric and did not have to clean up after them or feed and water them.... You are so right! I know my limits, and caring for chickens from 0-6 weeks is outside them. I...

WHAT is going on with gold sex-links?!?! I have a ROO, too!

Yes, Marcy, that guy obviously knew what was going on from the beginning. Not someone you'd want to do business with again. At least you'll be eating $5.25 chickens when you harvest them. Seems more reasonable than $14. I paid $10 for each of my 8-week-olds. All but one of the roos I...

WHAT is going on with gold sex-links?!?! I have a ROO, too!

Cambriagardener, you are so right about the okay odds! 4 out of 5 Buff Orpingtons turning out to be hens is pretty good...much better than when 4 out of 4 RIR pullets turned out to be roosters, or Marcy's 12 out of 12 BOs, or Elizabeth's 5 out of 5 BOs. I have someone who's interested in...

Warning - objectionable content! Can I improve my eggs' flavor?

I've been washing all my eggs - clean, dirty, lumpy, stained. But I believe you guys, really I do, and I declare myself FREE of eggwashing! If I must clean something off, I'll do it with plain, warm, running water and no scrubbing. I do change nest bedding frequently and remove any fresh poop...
