    rooster injuring hens

I have ten birds, nine months old.two are male and get along with each other, in fact the smaller one defers to the larger. Several of the females have bare sore patches on their wings and backs. I assume this is where one or both roosters hold on while mating. I put saddle/aprons on them but...

    Broody in winter

I have 8 females and two males that are all 7 months old. I wasn’t expecting it this soon but one of the hens has gone broody. I would like to grow the flock but if I let her stay in the nest in the coop the chicks would hatch around thanksgiving. It can get extremely cold here. Am I right in...

    Tiny loner

I didn’t realize when I ordered them that they are smaller. I only read about temperaments. I’ve love the spunkiness.

    Tiny loner

I wish I could just add more. This whole venture was supposed to be my way of easing into retirement. I thought Id raise a few chicks so I ordered some from a feed store. how would I go about finding crested birds that I could integrate into my flock?

I would appreciate your thoughts about this since I have not yet butchered one of my own birds. I put the most aggressive cockerel , Roscoe, out in the run and put tiny Zazu in a box where she could come and go as she pleases. This is inside the 10x10 coop where I sit and watch them sometimes...

The Easter eager cockerel is much worse than the black Australope, maybe I’ll cull him and see if the Aussie matures into a good rooster.

    Tiny loner

yes. I started with two but one died mysteriously. That is a good point, though.being smallest and different probably works against her.

I am new to chickens. I have ten 18 week old birds that I have raised from chicks. Two have turned out to be Cockrells that, of course, are becoming cocky. The problem is, my smallest bird, a tiny Polish, seems to get the brunt of their frat boy behavior. A few weeks ago she started sleeping in...

Having a roo in your flock

No, I’m brand new at this. I have a second young cockerel (I think) that gets along well

Having a roo in your flock

I am also surprised to have a cockerel in the group. He is about 16 weeks old, and has just started to crow enthusiastically. He is also acting like a frat boy and sexually harassing the smallest pullets, the flock often won’t come out of the coop and I wonder if it is because it is harder for...

    Managing Heat Stress

our weather went straight to summer, today, topping out at 100. Several of my three month olds were panting heavily and looking stressed.I happened to have several plastic "blue ice" packs in the freezer so I placed them around on the floor of the run and came back to find everyone sitting on or...

    Chicken unexplained/unexpected death

Ruthie Bader Hensburg, One of my three month old chicks died in the night . I went out to “tuck them in” before I went to bed as usual. It was a couple hours after dark but they were all awake huddled together on their roost as they like to do. She was on the next roost down from the other 9 but...
