I was laying in bed this morning at 6:25, just figuring out if I want to get up or try to sleep-in some more. I heard my kids - they got up early and were milling around in the kitchen. I then heard sound like woo-woo-woo very softly. I dismissed it as the kids fooling around. Then I heard...
Well, the tide has turned...
When I got home this afternoon, the chickens are still broke apart into their cliques - the old, and the young. The rooster must have been upstaged by the old hens today, because his attitude is very different today - almost like he's watching his back constantly...
Yesterday, I added three buff orpingtons to the coop. I had wanted to get some chicks, because frankly I enjoy raising them, but I had a hard time finding some at the feed stores around here. I decided to go a different route, and found some young ones on Craigslist - two hens and a rooster...
Hey guys...I live in the suburbs, and I have chickens (all hens) but was thinking about getting a couple of turkeys. What are their space requirements? Are they very noisy? I hunt wild turkeys so I know about gobbling and hen yelping, I just didn't know if their domestic cousins were the same...
For my run, I just use bare ground - when the chickens have used it to the point that it hardens up and rain won't soak in anymore, or I notice a lot of manure on the surface, I use my roto-tiller to break up the ground and turn the soil. Have to do it every couple months or so.
I recently made a new chicken coop for my backyard, with some scrap wood from an old deck, and an old dog pen.
The dog pen is approx. 8' x 12', and I tried to figure out a way to integrate some sort of coop, with a couple of nests and a roost, without cutting a hole in the fencing, like a...
Hey guys...I have wanted to make a chicken tractor for a long time and I finally broke down and made one with some scrap materials. It is about 3x9 in size.
Back view, with access hatch for nest box:
They found the nest
I have it sitting in my garden, where they are taking care of...
I had a galvanized water can that stayed pretty clean for about a year then it started to rust. If I changed the water in the can daily, the water quality was unaffected by the rust, but if I let it go a couple days, the water would get that horrid red color in no time. I switched to the...
I've probably got less than $100 in my current coop - I don't have any pics up yet, but the coop was made with mostly leftover building materials and scrap wood. The most cost went toward poultry fencing...
I thought about this myself, as when I got into doing this I just wanted eggs and I saw them more as pets. Since I got my new flock, I've decided to take a different approach to chickens now, keeping it 'strictly business' in anticipation of putting some meat in the freezer.
Besides, if I...
I had a similar problem with my first coop - it was 3x5 with nest boxes built sticking out of one wall (so I could raise the lid/roof on the nest boxes to remove eggs) the girls were roosting on the edge on the nests instead of the pole I put in the middle of the coop. I solved this by tacking...
I have a Home Depot type of dog kennel for my black lab. It is like 6' x 12' with the single door. What I did for a roof? I bought enough 12' sheet metal roofing to cover it, and using a couple of 4x4's and some 2x4's laid across, I made a slant roof for the kennel. To protect from wind...
Gonna add my two cents
1.Should we put the Rooster in w/the ladies? Some one told us not to if we were wanting eggs to eat.
I had a rooster once. The crowing at 4am got old fast, plus he was hen-pecked until he got some size to him - then he finally built up his courage and "had relations...

I used to be a member of this board back about 6-7 years ago - at my peak I had about 10 hens of various breeds. I had to give them up when I moved away to take a job in another state.
Unfortunately the gentleman I gave them to lived in the country on a...
