    Runt chicken?

Good to hear! I have four 5-week old chicks. One of the two Australorps is certainly smaller than the other, but she's acting and eating normally and has the same amount of feathering. I was thinking (hoping!) that maybe chickens, like humans, come in all different sizes. Nonetheless, I'm still...

Since I wouldn't have been tall enough to lift up the roof on the nesting box, I had it built so the back side flips down (pics below). Thanks for all your kind comments Sylvester017! Apparently, all my time my BYC researching coops was well worth it!

Yes, the hardware cloth is attached to the base under the trim board. It is not anchored into the ground, but after the above picture was taken, we installed cross members to firm up the entire structure and to support the metal roof. You can kind of see the cross members in the picture below...

    On a BYC Binge!

Our chicks arrived this week and they all seem to be doing well! One of the Black Australorps is notably smaller than the other, so I'm going to keep a close eye on her. I may need to give her some extra TLC! Any suggestions on how to help the "runt" of the flock? Since my first post, I've...

    Hello! Waiting impatiently in VA

Yes, in a few more years we'll be ready for a hive! Right now my girls are still to young and curious for us to have a bee hive on our 1/2 acre property. When they're a little older, I think it will be a great family project! Here in Raleigh there is an annual coop tour...

Yes, I was quite concerned about predators when building our coop. It's not unusual to see foxes in our neighborhood, and although I've never seen a raccoon, I'm sure they are around. Not to mention all the hawks, copperheads and neighborhood cats! I dug a trench around the entire perimeter...

    Got sand? You should!

We just finished our first coop, and I did a lot of searching around our area (Raleigh, NC) for course construction sand or river sand and came up with nothing. I finally learned that in our area, the term they use is "screenings" for this type of course sand. I was able to go to a local...

You can find 2-gallon food-grade buckets that are BPA free on Amazon. I just got mine this week and they're the perfect size for a small flock. I made a waterer using nipples, and it couldn't have been easier! Just drilled several holes in the bottom of the bucket with a 1/4-inch drill bit...

The Raleigh Cluckers' Club -- NOW OPEN!!!

It was quite a project! We've never had chickens before, so I immersed myself in chicken coop study and found SOOO many great ideas on this site! First we laid the foundation for the run. My husband was very obsessed with things like "level" and "square". Who knew these things were...

    On a BYC Binge!

We've been working our tail feathers off getting the coop ready, so we're ahead of schedule! Here's a picture of the nearly completed coop and run. We installed a metal roof on the run and built an access door this past weekend. This week I'll bring in coarse construction sand for the coop...

Hi everyone, I'm so glad I found this site! In fact, I've been sitting here for nearly three hours trying to soak it all in! I'm a clucker newbie with aspirations of becoming a competent clucker-keeper, so I have a lot to learn! I'm currently researching breeds and coop designs and reside...
