    Vickery, I think I started out with about 4 inches of sand and I also added a bag of Sweet PDZ to the sand. Every day when I sift the coop I sprinkle a bit more of the Sweet PDZ over the sand especially over any damp places.

    They are a little older so...yes, their egg production is going to decline somewhat but not to that extent. I would think the heat (definitely) and their short broody state probably has the most to do with it though. Chickens eat less when it's hot, therefore they don't get the protein and such...

    I found a large metal scooper thing on the side of the road (I LOVE when I find cool stuff like that!!), brought it home and had my husband drill holes in it as well. I love it! Not sure what size drill bit he used though...the holes are about the size of my pinkie finger if that helps ;)
