    DIY Humidity Controller

I use a small travel humidifier that uses a water bottle like this one. I connect a piece of plastic hose from the output to a hole in the incubator. The humidity is controlled using a digital humidity controller. Works great. http://a.co/1HFRbGa http://a.co/7XMZDpE

    Rcom Max 20 without dividers

Has anyone tried running their Rcom without the dividers in? I was wondering if the eggs would still turn or just jam up on one side. Just trying to think of ways to get more eggs in.

    Farm innovations 4250 incubator

I bought one of these last year and I've had a heck of a time keeping the temperature constant. I use a Brinsea Spot Check thermometer to confirm what the actual temperature is and set it at 99.5 and I added a remote reading thermometer with min/max to see the range. It runs fine for awhile...

Marans eggs - first time trying to hatch

I have Marans and I run the humidity a little lower than other light colored eggs. I believe the extra coating on the egg makes them lose water slower. Coupled with having a large chick anyway I find that it works better for me. You want room in the shell for the chick to turn around and breathe.

Does packing affect hatch of shipped eggs?

I am looking for feedback on if the way eggs are packed makes a difference in their end hatching success. There are a lot of variables between when an egg leaves the shipper and when the buyer receives it and most are out of our control but one that can be controlled is how the egg is packed...

DIY Incubator - Specs and ??

Switch to a 25 Watt refrigerator bulb. You can get 1 at a dollar store. Take out the wet paper towel for now as well as the tin foil, water bottle and rock. You don't need any of that stuff in there and none of it produces heat, you need to get the heat up. You can also try putting a towel or...

What gender, please? :-) 6-week-old barnyard mixes

Pea combs genes are dominant, single comb is recessive so if the hen is pure Ameraucana the chicks would inherit the pea comb. However if the hen was cross bred with a recessive single comb gene ie (Pp) then crossing with a single comb roo (pp) has a 2:4 chance of yielding a single comb.

    Brooder

I made 2 that I use all the time. They are 18" wide X 18" tall X 4' long and can be made from 1 sheet of plywood. Heat is provided by a single heat lamp on an electric baseboard thermostat. I built them bolted together at the corners so I can take them apart and stand the pieces against the...

Question about the daily cooling period.

Brinsea has a couple of scientific reports on their website about cooling and the effects. What I think happens is that as the egg cools it contracts slightly drawing air in through the pores in the shell. Then as it warms up and expands it pushes some air out. Breathing in effect. That helps...

    Adding hens to ducks

OK - I meet your criteria. When I set up my current coop 15 years ago the first birds I bought were 5 mature ducks. I then added chickens as chicks and have had them together ever since. I currently have about 30 ducks in with about the same number of chickens plus ducklings and chicks that...

How hot is too hot for 5 week old guineas?

They are from Africa and can take heat. Panting is how they regulate their temperature like a dog.

6 foot fenced acre and safety

Mine can easily fly to the roof of our workshop which I think is 14 feet. I let them out to range free during the day but they always come back at night to roost. I say always but occasionally one will get seperated and end up spending the night somewhere. Overall they tend to be pretty wary...

Foxes and Electric Fencing? Help PLEASE!

I think you'd be better off with a livestock guardian dog.

Foxes and Electric Fencing? Help PLEASE!

It's hard to tell from your picture but you might have a weak point between the bottom right corner of the gate and the post. It looks like there is a hole between the cinder block and the post. A fox can get through a 6"x6" hole easily. We had a fox problem 2 years ago. The only sure solution...

    duck eggs

I guess they are not fertile. If they are anything except Muscovies they shouldn't take longer than 29 days. How old is your Drake? Some males are aggressive maters and some the conditions have to just right. Do they have swimming water? Some will only mate on water. I've had 3 batches this...

Is it normal if ducks haven't started pipping at 28 days?

Lillightning - I know it's too late now but do you know what your humidity was near the end? On ducks it's critical to get the humidity up to 75% in the last 3 days because the membrane on a duck egg is tough. I raise ducks and when people say they have trouble hatching ducks it's usually...

    Keeping Humidity Right

You want the egg to lose about 12% of it's weight in moisture over the incubation period which for peafowl is 28 days. So the best way is to weigh the eggs every 7 days. I weigh the eggs at the start add up the total weight then and calculate what they should be at the end. I then draw a line...
