How often do hens go broody?

Thanks silkiecuddles.. I appreciate the reply. I guess that hens are gonna sit when they're gonna sit. I agree that she is gorgeous- about the best looking hen I have. The chicks are from eggs laid by my other hens - at least from their appearance because none look like her. Two of the four...

How often do hens go broody?

I have a game hen that sat and hatched eggs about 6 weeks ago. After two weeks I took the chicks and kept them separate, wanting them to be more like pets for a friend. At first, she seemed like she was about to go crazy, running around and attacking just about anything that moved. She did...

    Trouble on the nest

OK. I let the sitting hen stay on her eggs, not expecting them to hatch. Well, 3 of the 8 eggs did hatch and she seems to be a good momma. Even though I didn't expect any to hatch, it was disappointing to see so many that didn't. But happy to see that at least 3 came through. Now I have a...

Cross bred - what do they become?

Thanks for the response. I had chickens when I was a kid, but didn't know much about them. Guess I still don't. But they are fun and I'm enjoying them.

Cross bred - what do they become?

I guess I'm not sure myself? But when a large breed (Gold Sex Link) is bred with a bantam - does it become a bantam - just plain crossbred - without a specific designation. I know that new breeds have been created by crossbreeding.

Cross bred - what do they become?

I had to ask what breed my rooster is and was told that it is a red sex link (or a gold sex link - both just different names for the same thing). My hens are different breeds. What are the chicks from the hatchings? : game hen; buff orpington; bantam; and either production red or Rhode...

    Trouble on the nest

The problem started yesterday - maybe before. I had 2 hens sitting eggs. The first used the nest box where most hens in my flock lay their eggs. The second hen started sitting her eggs under the nest box where the first was sitting. The eggs hatched on Monday, 20 Apr, 2 days ago. One egg...

Comment by 'Tony Al' in article 'Guide to Letting Broody Hens Hatch and Raise Chicks'

This is a well written article. Answered all my questions. I have been waiting for a hen to go broody and it has finally happened - a game hen. She is in a separate coop from where the rest of the flock spends the night. Other hens go in, but come right back out. I plan on letting her hatch...

    Boody Hen or not

Well it has been awhile now, but I am no longer confused. The hen I thought might be sitting eggs - isn't. But I have another that that definitely started a couple of days ago. I have a couple of ceramic eggs that I put in boxes where I wanted the hens to lay - that worked. I noticed one hen...

I believe she is. It seems she is there each night that I check.

    Boody Hen or not

I have been confused by one of my hens. Sometimes she seems to be sitting - but then she seems to be out of the nest more than I think a broody hen would be. She seems to be in the nest more often than not. She even pecked at me once when I was checking to see if additional eggs were laid by...

New member - what breed is this guy?

Ahhh. I didn't give a description - not experienced at posting here & thought the picture would show, but it doesn't really. Another person thought he is a Gold Sex Link. You say definitely a Red Sex Link. This guy is white, with brown across the wings and some in the back. He has a definite...

New member - what breed is this guy?

The hen in this picture was purchased separately. I think she is a game x, like you say. I've gotten a couple of bantams recently also.
