Do you let your chickens free range when there is snow on the ground?

This will be our first winter as chicken owners. We have three adult buff orp hens. We converted an old outhouse into a coop for them when they were old enough to live outside. Here it is: It has narrow rectangular vents covered with hardware cloth on the top and bottom side walls. You...

American(Buff, Blue, Lavander, etc.)goose thread! Post pics!

Dootadoo, I lost my beloved American Buff pet goose, Jupiter, when she was just shy of turning 4 months old. I understand your pain all too well. She died July of last year. I want geese again, but haven't gotten any yet, mostly because it feels too much like I'm replacing her. Next year...

When do Buff Orpingtons start laying?

First time chicken owner. I bought 3 buff orp chicks back in mid April. They had their first adult feathers just coming in on their wing tips when I got them. I put their age between 18 to 20 weeks. One of them laid her first egg today!

Why do my chickens roll in the dirt

LOL! I have one chick who does this. I came here to research it because she is so lethargic right after she covers herself in dirt. The other two chicks don't do this much. Her name is May, but I'm thinking about renaming her Pig Pen. I'm glad it's normal behavior. She's not really dying...

    Pomeranian Goose Breed Thread

Could be American Buff? This is my girl, Jupiter, when she was a few weeks old. The markings are similar. Not an expert though. She's the only goose I ever had. Congrats on everyone's new babies. They are all so pretty, I want to cuddle them! :)

Brazen Hawks and Ninja Chipmunks Questions

I take my 3 buff orp girls out for short excursions on warm sunny days, like today. When I take them out, I give them my full attention making sure I know where they are at all times. So far, they are very good about not straying too far. This morning as I watched them play, I contemplated...

How are they in cold climates? Do they need extra heat in the winter time? We moved to a property at the 3500 elevation level near the Canadian border in WA. Last winter we had about 3 feet of snow. Would they do alright in that environment?

    Treats for baby chicks

I don't know if geese have similar digestive systems to chickens, but thought you might find this useful. When I had my gosling, I gave her approved treats. However, any change to her diet, caused changes to her poop. Sometimes those changes were rather.....forceful and eye watering. I just...

    My three ladies!

Hello again BYC! I joined early last year when I became the happy owner of an American Buff gosling named Jupiter. Sadly, she passed after being on this earth a mere 14 weeks. It's nearly a year later and so much has changed. Jupiter inspired us to make a radical lifestyle...

ISO American Buff, Embden, and Toulouse goslings near Oroville, Washington

Good Morning Everyone! We just purchased a homestead and are looking to start our first flock this spring. Local breeders are my first choice. We are looking to pre order a pair of Buffs, a pair of Toulouse, and a pair of Embden. Friendly genetics much more important than show quality...

    Jupiter :(

When I was just shy of turning five years old, my mother and I found a baby kitten hiding underneath my step father's car. It was mewing and looked scared. My mother was able to coax it out from under the car. She took the kitten inside and we played with it. The kitten was instantly...

    House Goose Thread

Lucky! Jupiter doesn't like dogs or kids. She ignores them as long as they keep walking by her. If they stop to look at her, she belts out a blood curdling scream, runs in circles flapping her wings like crazy. There's a little girl that keeps coming by to see her. I will go stand next to...

    House Goose Thread

I freaking love Cas's play pen! It looks like a Disneyland for geese :) littlegosling, I don't envy your position. Not having a supportive SO, would make life terribly difficult. I am a homemaker which allows me to be with Jupiter full time. Even so, I have times that I feel overwhelmed...

    House Goose Thread

That's a really neat set up for Cas. Does he go into his house or does he pretty much hang out in his little yard? How do you keep Pear and his friend from ripping off their bandanas? Jupiter immediately shredded the bling on her diaper harness.

sliping on edge of kiddie pool

Do you serve the crumbles in water or do you give it to the geese dry? I ask because Jupiter is still working down her bag of Mazuri waterfowl starter pellets I bought when she was a week old. The bag is nearing the end. I've been wondering what supplemental feed I should upgrade her to. I...
