Just a side note about using the paper towel over the shavings. I haven't tried paper towel but what I use is those puppy training pads. They are the perfect size for the bottom of my brooder. Then I just roll them half way up, set the other one down and continue rolling as I finish laying the...
I am on day 24 and my last one of 18 just got out of it's shell. It ended up very dry and so what I did was break away as much of the shell that I could (without pulling) and then laid the egg of a wet paper towel. The little guy is out now!
Here are some new pics. They are 1 week old now and I am wondering if anyone knows now. I have someone interested in purchasing some but cannot have males. The first one is the one with chipmunk markings and the other one is the one I think is a female.
I was told with this pairing that I should be able to tell the sex by the colours. This is what I was told: "red chicks would be female and white chicks would be males". My problem is, I'm not sure which are red and which are white. They each have a little bit of red in them but the ones that...
I have 6 newly hatched chicks and I'm not sure what sex they are. The are the offspring of a partridge chantecler roo and a white americauna hen. Pic 1 and 2 are of the same chick. They kind of have chipmunk markings.
Pic 3 - there are 4 chicks like this, no real markings, a little darker on...
We have babies!!!! Out of the 16 eggs that were in the incubator, 8 have hatched and 3 more are pipped. It looks like I have 4 female dominiques, 1 male dominique and 3 female ameracauna x chanteclers. The other 3 that are pipped are ameracauna x chanteclers. I also have 2 chanteclers that...
Hatch day starts this morning for me. I heard chirping from the eggs this morning but no movement or pipping. I have to go out of town this afternoon until tomorrow afternoon and I hope that they wait until I get back. DH will be here but I want to see them!!!The kids are so excited too. I have...
Last evening I officially went into lock down with my first hatch. I started out with 25 eggs (9 partridge chanteclers, 7 chantecler x dominiques, and 9 chantecler x white ameraucaunas) and I locked down with 2 chanteclers, 5 dominiques and all of the ameraucaunas because I can't see in them...
I had read a post on here (can't find it now) about what I would get from my chickens when crossed.
Particularly, I am wondering about sex. I have a partridge chantecler that I crossed with a white ameraucauna and a dominique. Someone wrote how I could tell them apart (males from females) when...
I was just wondering if that was the non-slip kitchen shelf liners that you have on top of the wire mesh? I was thinking of doing that. Does it work well?
I set my first eggs on February 21st and they are due to hatch on March 14th. I put 25 eggs in and as of right now out of the 16 that I can see into there are 7 that are viable. I can't see through 9 because of the green shells. 4 out of those first 16 were just an experiment as they were in the...
I set 25 eggs last Sunday and candlled them for the first time today. I have 7 eggs that definitly have someone growing inside and 9 that I can't see because the eggs are too dark (ameraucauna x partridge chantecler). I have a few that I am still hopeful about and a couple that I just don't...
Thanks Larry! I didn't know anything about the farmer's almanac thing. The reason that I put them in now is that they will hatch (hopefully) during March break. I have that week off and my oldest son will be home from school so will be able to see them hatch as well.
I put my first 25 eggs in the bator today. I set 9 chantecler, 7 chantecler X dominiques and 9 chantecler X white ameraucaunas. Wish me luck as these are the first eggs we've ever set. So far, so good as far as temp and humidity go!!!
