Ok, I started my chicken run/tractor. It's 4'X8'X3H
This is where the run will end up.
The dogs watched but weren't much help.
Got it standing and added some supports for stability.
Door frame for connector to the raised coop.
Painted before the hardware cloth goes on.
added a...
I've tried to make my coop as Fort Knox as possible.
It's about 3 feet off of the ground. The 3 sides (with latched doors) with hardware cloth are not reachable without some acrobatics (hanging down from the roof or a huge leap from a tree). The one side that a raccoon could get too is all wood...
I have a small hot weather coop & run...I built it myself so it isn't too hard. Check out my page https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=33375
The key is shade and open air.
I have a small hot weather coop here in Florida where it gets just as hot. I put one wall up in the direction of where the wind and sun come from and have the other three sides as wired doors that give very easy access to anything in the coop.
The chickens go in there at night and sleep on...
I was just reading this site and it was saying that with 100 pounds of table scraps you can get about 1 pound of larvae to feed your chickens per day.
Looks pretty interesting. I usually don't have many scraps though. I wonder if those little things would eat pine shavings...

Do you mean how much room between the opener and the open door? I believe it is an inch. Let me know if you need more info because I just ordered one today from Foy's. I'm sure I can answer questions when mine comes and I'll see for myself.
Foy's said unless I buy a door, the...
Also, advice I got here that has worked out is that if you want just 2 hens...then you should get maybe 4 chicks...there's a 50% chance that your chickens will become roosters...
I initially got 6 chicks because I wanted 2-3 hens...but the guy I bought them from had a decent track record for...

I have the tunnel connected to the tractor with a vice. I just pull the vice off and move it. I still have the hardware cloth for the opening attached so it just closes right up.
I haven't used the tractor as a tractor though...the DW thought that the chickens would destroy the grass...
I've been looking at these also...what is the clearance needed from bottom of the door to the top?
Also, what's to prevent a raccoon from opening the door at night?
I built my coop with the intent on having 2-3 chickens. Check out my BYC page...the coop is 4X4 and the run is 4X8.
There are a lot of factors when building, if you're up north you have to plan around insulating the place, if you're in the south you need to factor in heat, giving plenty of...
Instead of using a lock, I use those clips like you use for your keychain (at least that's what my wife uses them for).
You can see them on my nest box:
Ok, I finally finished my little tunnel from the coop to the tractor. The first night I kinda had to push them up one by one...last night I put them all in there and they slowly walked up to the top and went in the coop. They come out in the morning when I open the door in the morning because I...
So, I have 4 chicks that grew into 3 hens and a rooster...they're about 4 months old and the rooster has made a few attempts at making noises but we've been waiting on him to wake us up one morning with a loud crow...
So Saturday morning I hear what sounded like an old dying dog howling...I...
Well, I got them down...I just went and pushed them off of the roost one by one...the rooster really didn't want to get off, clinging to the roost and then jumping back up. The hens slowly got around to pecking at the ground and I eventually coaxed them out in the same order that they usually...
Ok, I have 4 chickens and I usually wake up around 7 and take them from the coop to the run. Usually the later it is, they'll be waiting for me at the coop door. Today is Sunday and my DW went out to get them at 8 and they didn't want to come down from the roost. It's almost 9 and they're still...
