We live in Canada and winters are long, snow drifts are hard to deal with. So my thinking was that eggs would be easier to collect (less frozen eggs) and easier access to electricity for heating and water source.. I’m open to opposing views though - do you think it’s not worth building something...
I’m building a new home. It will have an attached garage. I have an idea to make an egg box built into the wall of the garage (kind of like a dog Door ;). My plan is just to have 3-5 chickens in a shed just outside the garage, and the egg box will be in the wall of the garage. My contractor is...
Please help! Is anyone familiar with ducks on here? We had two runner ducks hatch a month and a half ago. I had to assist one in hatching. They were both strong and healthy and running around. We moved them outside a month ago and they were running with my other ducks and doing great. Then a...
No. Not at all. They have some garden fencing on the ground to prevent animals from digging in. But that's the only thing j can think of that he may have got caught in..
I have four pekin Ducks (two drakes, two hens approx 16 weeks old) and when I went to refresh their water this morning I noticed that one of my drakes had blister like bums on his legs. I caught him and felt the lumps and it seemed like they were liquid filled (soft). Has anyone seen anything...
came to check on my girl and found her dead like this.
The soonest I can get a necropsy is on Monday! Is there any way I can preserve the body for a necropsy on Monday so that I don't have to euthanize another bird?! Help!
I had a chicken just die. I suspect my flock has mareks. I was planning to send off one of my other chickens for a necropsy on Monday (soonest I could get it in) but now that this one has died, I would rather save my other bird for now and just use this one for the necropsy. Is there any way I...
No. I actually live in Canada, Alberta. My province pays for the necropsy completely an handles all the shipping. I am just asked to bring my bird in to a facility to be euthanized and then they will ship it to the provinces location where necropsy share performed.
Thank you for your help. I...
Thank you eggcessive!! I was able to find that link and found it very helpful (and very disappointing to imagine that my little flock has been exposed). One of my chickens who is having a very difficult time with her eye is set to be euthanized on Monday with a necropsy to follow.
I wasn't...
** I also forgot to mention how I found them **
With the Cochin, i had noticed one day that her leg seemed to be giving her trouble throughout the day. It would occasionally just "jut out". The next morning I found her and she had completely lost the use of the leg all together. About 4-5 days...
First off, there are 4 ducks and 5 chickens (2 Cochins and 3 buff orpingtons). All purchased from an auction (which was probably my first mistake). The Cochins are about 16 weeks old and the buffs are about 12 weeks old. They are all housed in an 8 ft tall a-frame coop with a 8 ft by 12 ft...
I went out to my coop this morning and found a SECOND chicken with a broken leg! Am I feeding something wrong? Is there something I should be adding to increase bone strength?
The first chicken (black Cochin) I had to euthanize because the break was so high up that a splint was ineffective and...
I live in Canada and when I called the program operating through the government to ask about getting one tested they told me they only do necropsy and would have to kill the bird to do any testing. Any other vet clinics are going to charge me 75 dollars just for the visit and then the testing...
No I don't know what the problem is I just kept reading that if they are infected then they will keep re infecting future birds. Is this true? I would rather not kill them.
Three out of six of my chickens (black Cochins) have one or two eyes that look like this. Does anyone know what could be wrong? There's no sneezing or weezing. Just the swollen eyes.
Can chickens spread illnesses to ducks and vice versa? My ducks and chickens are in the same coop. I have a couple chickens that have become infected with a respiratory disease and am considering culling the whole flock to avoid future birds becoming infected. Will I have to cull my ducks as...
I purchased three black Cochins and three buff orpingtons at an auction (they are ranging from 3-10 weeks old).
My three black Cochins all have one or two eyes swollen shut. I think they may have coryza or crd? I don't know. I started them on super boost (has antibiotics penicillin in it) three...
