    Wood Duck ??? help please

I just said its not a proven fact a hybrid has never reproduced. I agree it is highly unlikely, but i have seen a hybrid that looked to be a 2nd generation hybrid, and thats not coming from me, that is from a biologist. I know, most of them can't tell a picture of a wigeon from the real thing...

    Wood Duck ??? help please

It is not proven that they are all infertile... But most are. The Silver wood duck is from "inbreeding" not "interbreeding". Breed back to the same bloodlines time and time again and you can get cool color birds, but they are far inferior to their properly bred counterparts!

    Wood Duck ??? help please

It might work, Mallards cross with wood ducks, though they aren't very good looking. If it is successful, they will look much like mallardXwood duck crosses you can find on the internet. I wouldn't do it, not eye appealing, she may get beat up, prob won't accept him at all, etc. It is illegal...

Ned help on choosing breed pls? Wood or Mandarin or ??

Assuming you can let them go, which isn't legal anywhere I know of, I would prob go with Ring teal... Mandarins will most likely go north as they are cold weather birds, and wood ducks will most likely migrate with some of the others that do around there. They are both very shy and will look for...

    mandarin duck freeranging

They are not on any list, State or Federal as being protected... If you shot a chicken while pheasant hunting would you include that in your bag limit too? No... If I shot a non native species to the US, I would keep shooting til my real bag limit is filled... They are considered as the exotics...

    mandarin duck freeranging

They are migratory, but not here! They have no idea where to go and will just die. I've heard of a few joining up with flocks of wood ducks and making it around. Native to Russia and Japan, they are migratory over there. It is illegal to introduce a non-native species into the wild, on purpose...

Ducks for the beginner: Mandarin or Ring Teal?

No permits required for either breed you are asking about... As long as you live in the US. They are non native and are considered as livestock (chickens, domestics, etc). Your local Division of Wildlife Resources may tell you differently, but check the list of birds that require a permit and...

help! found wood duckling (i think)

Yeah, the ring and thread isn't that accurate... My last duckling that an 'experienced' sexer with the ring and thread method got it wrong. And it swung pretty hard suggesting the male, and it grew up into a beautiful hen! Not that it really matters that much finding out what the sex is at the...

IIs it against the law to have a canadian geese in VA?

I say if its "Canadian" then its an illegal immigrant if it cannot produce the proper paperwork and should be turned in to the proper authorities... Now a "Canada" goose is different. Those aren't illegal if you have proper paperwork to keep them. Sorry, Canadian means it has residency, Canada...

    Baikal Teal

Where are the "right" places to look? I've had experience with Mallard Lane Farms, and even though Jamie is really nice, it seems like a crap shoot on whether or not they'll have them for sale... Please give me a name or hatchery that produces them dependably or maybe even have some older...

    Baikal Teal

Thanks for the info! I might have to take over the rabbit pen for them! My wife won't be too happy about that... Is there a breeder that consistently has them for sale? I've noticed a few breeders offer them, but its a crap shoot from year to year and usually ends up not having them... Travis

    Baikal Teal

I am looking for any info on Baikal Teal, as well as where to get a pair or two... I've read some pretty general stuff so far. Hardy birds, but hard to get to reproduce. Do they breed their first year? etc... Any help would be very appreciated! Travis

    Mandarin and Wood Duck Crosses

I had a couple ducks hatch this year, supposedly wood ducks that never have fully developed into drakes or hens... I sole them to two different people thinking they would mature, but as far as I know they still haven't. And they are suspecting they might be crosses and all I have are wood ducks...

    Does anyone keep "Storm" wigeon?

From what I know, which isn't much, the Storm Wigeon isn't a phase, its coloring that is unique to that bird. They are not common enough to do research on whether or not Storm Wigeon have offspring with the same coloration. If there are some in captivity and this knowledge is to be had, I would...

Mute Swan population to be killed!!!! Has anyone else heard this?

You are right, BBB, people that want to do the most good (on the outside) cause the most problems. "We can't find a humane way to deal with this problem", "well then, lets not deal with it at all" People need to wake up and realize a problem needs to be dealt with immediately! All the feel goods...

Mute Swan population to be killed!!!! Has anyone else heard this?

The only decent way I've had it was jerked... I'm not a fan of liver either, so most waterfowl is pretty gross to me. Geese are alright though! And maybe crustacean fed mute swan!

Mute Swan population to be killed!!!! Has anyone else heard this?

There is a hunting season... 365 days long! They do inhabit the same areas as tundra swan in the fall migration, so people may not shoot them because they don't want to make a mistake and shoot a tundra swan when they thought they were shooting at a mute swan. also, the rules with hunting is...

Mandarin Duck thread ( for posting pictures and discussing)

Dr. Todd, BBB... Please stay on topic! We'd all love to see pics of your birds, most of us can only dream of having more than 15-20 birds, hundreds or thousands would be a sight to behold , but this is the Mandarin duck thread! Looking forward to seeing a new thread posted soon! I was down to...
